Interest in a pass around?

Gianni has offered a knife for a pass around so I thought I would start this thread to gauge interest. Gianni wants people to be able to see his products and to also get some feed back on the knives.

He has offered a M5 machete as the first knife for a pass around. I have included pictures and specs below. If you would be interested in being involved in the pass around mention it here, although this is not the official thread and will not guarantee you a spot in the initial pass around. This is mainly to see if people are interested and to let people know it is being planned. Also, if you would like to see another knife involved in a pass around go ahead and mention it. This is just meant to be an informal post to see how many people are interested in this. When I get the knife and figure out the details I will post an official post in the pass around forum and will link to it in this thread. More than likely this will be a permanent pass around so if you miss out on the first one there should be another opportunity later on.

Hopefully this will work out well and members will get to experience the quality products that Lionsteel is producing since they are an Italian company and not well known here. Yet. :) Also, Gianni likes to hear suggestions on things he can do to make his products better and more popular. This will hopefully work out well and be beneficial to everyone.

Let us know what you think!

Looks good to me. I would certainly be interested. I'd also really like to see a pass on the Legion knife. I'm particularly interested in the one without the swedge. Thanks.

I would definately like to see what Lion Steel is all about. From what I hear they are top notch.

I'd like to handle the:

SR-1
Daghetta 8700FC

I'm not a "big knife" guy anymore so while the machete looks cool, I've got no personal use for it. Folders now, are another topic! I'm open for any folder passaround he's willing to sponsor.

Hi FlaMtnBkr -

I would be interested in the Machete passaround.

I have the DPx folder and I was impressed with that knife, my first experience with a Lionsteel product.

The machete would come in handy when I start mushroom hunting later this spring, and just for walking through the dense brush that grows here in the woods.

Just as a word of advice, I would require each person in any pass around be required to first post a picture that THEY took with THEIR CAMERA, to show that they have a camera and the skills necessary to post a picture review.

best regards -

mqqn

All those who participate in the passaround will have to document the work or tests they do with photos or home movies.

I need to have a true fed-back. All these informations let me improve our new products

I would be interested in participating in a passaround of the M5.

I would be happy to use the machete and provide feedback with pics and a vid for Lionsteel.

I would be interested in a pass around of any LionSteel knife. I know them best for their folding knives and would suggest an SR-1 pass around, or the one with the aluminum handle version (can't recall the name.)

Hello Gianni!

I was going to suggest that all involved try to do a review and I see that you agree. If there is anything special that you would like to see happen with this pass around please let me know either here or private email.

I know many people put the review of the knife in the pass around thread but that really limits who sees the review. I would suggest a thread for pass around reviews either here in the Lionsteel forum, or in the knife review forum so that more members are able to see. Do others agree with this?

I was also thinking that since this is a machete we should maybe limit use of the knife around the ground. Hacking a tree in half at ground level is inviting the knife to make contact with a rock and put a big ding in the blade. I think we should maybe request that machete work be done in the air to chop branches at chest height to try and limit the chance of damaging the edge. I would want everyone to get to try the knife with a nice crisp edge. Maybe allow some batoning close to the ground but that be it? Does this sound like a bad idea?

I also don't know how most pass arounds handle sharpening of the knife. Maybe allow members to touch up the blade if you feel confident doing so but no power tools allowed? I think this knife might get used a little harder than most and sharpening might become an issue? Maybe have short pass arounds with only 5 people so that I can get the knife back to get it touched up? Or if we limit it to the normal 10 people, then if someone notices it gets dull or damaged then ship it to myself or someone that can put a good edge on before it goes on to the next person?

Sorry for the long post but I am just thinking out loud and always enjoy the input of other members. Any and all input is welcomed. Thanks!

If I may make a suggestion or two. I have run quite a few successful passarounds on Bladeforums.

First here are a few passarounds I have done. Feel free to use my layout if it pleases you.

I would limit it to no more than 10 people, arrange shipping by location. Start at a coast, and let the knife work it's way to the farthest person. That will cut down on shipping time.

Limit the participants to paying members or by post count and longevity. Paying members and members with a history here have more to loose..

Only people comfortable with sharpening a knife of this grind should be permitted to enter. They must not reprofile the edge, but just sharpen it.

Set a time limit for each person to have the knife. 5 days, a week, etc. Participants must ship the knife in the set time.

Shipping should be done via USPS Priority insured for the cost of the knife. With delivery confirmation.

Knife should be used for the purpose it was designed. No abuse, and participants should be responsible for it. If they break it, they buy it.

I am probably forgetting something, but I had a long day and I am tired..

Good luck with the passaround, I hope I am chosen to be one of the lucky participants.

Thank you very much for all the suggestions you gave us.
I am sure that "FlaMtnBkr" will keep it in order to organize a good passaraund.
No doub that you will be one of the ten users.

I got the knife today and it is a beast. I am going to fashion a forward lanyard to help with safety and maybe post a youtube video of it being used for those that haven't used them before. The stock is 5 mm thick so this knife has some heft and I would hate for it to get away from someone.

Gianni, the specs for the knife say the blade steel is 1075 plus chrome. Do you know how much chrome has been added? I know the blade will stain so I'm just curious if it is enough chrome to reduce staining at all? It would be nice if people get to see the knife as close to new as possible so I am wiping it down with a tough cloth and might even include one with the knife so others can also wipe it down after use.

I will start writing up all the pass around rules and probably post it over the weekend. In the mean time I am going to play with it some myself and strop the edge up some. It has a fairly thick edge so being really sharp is probably going to help quite a bit when chopping branches.

I have to say that I am not really a fixed blade guy and more of a folder person, but this knife just screams quality! I'm really excited to use it so I'm off to make a lanyard and play in the yard!

I'd like to see your, youtube video... a bit more focus on the handle largeness will be useful. That alone will explain volumes:thumbup: thanks:)

Id be in for the machete pass around, it will be my first - interested in the folders too -
