Interested in a small fixed blade for a work EDC

I posted a similar thread recently. I ended up with a Swamp Rat Knife Works "Swp Warden," which I'm really happy with so far.

The only differences between you and me are that I DO use the sh!t out of my seb. I figure... worst case is I could break the blade... $100 to replace is no biggie all things considered. Otherwise the seb looks GREAT with the scuffs and overall patina of EDC/use. ...that and your citys SUCKY BS knife laws. (if you haven't written SOMEONE on this topic, you might as well consider yourself PRO-restriction.)

That said... I've owned a few BMs and used them all, but not the 210. I find that their grinds are toooooo thick.... so if I were to buy another BM, it would have to be in person at a brick and mortar or show. Dare I say I believe that (not without exception) BM makes knives to sell knives, and while functional for those unfamiliar with fine cutlery, the are all but unacceptable for me.

I would go for a design of function over "bling." That said, I believe the perfect knife for you is the RAT RC-3. I've done PLENTY of research on exactly what you are looking for, and it's the RC-3.. I chose the SWKW SW becausey Seb offers most of the FUNCTION that any user could ask for. I wanted a FB for SD EDC that could also slice fruit (for instance) when I don't wanna gum up my seb. All things considered, I chose the SW due to its light weight. The skelly handle is taking its time to grow on me, but its getting better.

I had a small CGG sebe, and it was just too pretty to use on a construction site. I don't know if those scales can be refurbished, I should have got a plain small classic...live and learn. I traded it away and got a Strider PT as part of the trade. I really like this knife, fits my hand better than the Sebe did, using the choil, and the blade length is legal to EDC in most municipalities.

Yeah the knife laws do suck here. While the state of Ohio seems to have very little restrictions, it's all the municipalities I work and travel through that have 2.5" restrictions. I mainly EDC knives in the 3" blade range for work, not because of restrictions, but because I don't really need anymore length. I would have to send off alot of letters, to lots of cities, that I'm not even a resident of.
I'm an electrician so the toughest duty my knife will really see is stripping tough insulation ,on large cables. Which is why I would like a robust little fixed blade, that is light and can be carried relatively discretely.

Just about to recommend my BRKT Mini Northstar but on measuring the blade it's too long!
Pity as it's slim, grips well, looks good and is stainless.

How about getting a Mora and shortening the blade? They're cheap, tough and have good handles.

Had another idea on reflection: try a Bark River PSK, this has a just over 2" stainless blade, kydex sheath and lanyard hole. You won't be losing this one!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, and so far I'm still leaning towards the BRKT Mini Canadian. The blade length seems to be a little longer than I'm looking for, some sites say 2.5" others say 2.75". I would prefer to keep the length at 2.5", but I like choils on my knives and feel the mini Canadian will give me the best grip. So if I have to push the envelope with a 1/4" longer blade I will :D

The runner up so far is the BM Activator...a little pricier with the G10 but I like S30V steel, and the knife gives me close to a 3.5" handle. I'd actually probably go with the 211, with rosewood scales , and D2, just because I prefer the pouch that is supplied better.

Tied for Number 3 is the BRKT Mikro Canadian, and the PSK...these are the smallest knives that I'm looking at. I'm not sure if I'd like the 3" grip. I strongly prefer a solid four finger grip, and I'm assuming with these 2 a three finger grip would be all I'd get. Of these two the handle ergo's of the Mikro don't look too bad with the finger choil, plus it has the lowest price I have found online.

I'm going to take a run to the local Gander mountain...it seems a like I saw a small Ka-Bar a while back that woould fit my needs, so i'm going to go see if it is still hanging around.

Here's a shot of the Mikro and Mini-Canadians between a Griptilian and a 710, just for sizing purposes.

The Mini-Canadian is a better user, but the Mikro-Canadian is king if you work in a PC environment with lots of knife-scared folk. The Mikro actually handles quite well, given its size, and you'd be amazed at just how handy it is. Obviously it's not a "tacticool" knife, but in the woods or office, it gets constant use.

Here' my Mini-Canadian. It's a fine small knife.

From point A to point B is 2 & 1/8". From point A to point C is right at 6".

Well I couldn't take it any more and pulled the trigger. I ordered the Mini-Canadian, with a black carbon fiber handle:D. These babies are getting hard to find in stock! I was planning on the black or green micarta, but the black Carbon Fiber was the closest one I could find in stock, a few extra bucks but what the hell. Anyways thank again for all the input, and the empty wallet;)

Now that you've got that plain hard user out of the way :) , I think you need the Benchmade Snody 211 in silver G10 and carbon fibre for dress use. The S30v sharpens up a treat and the knife looks absolutely beautiful in person. It's really only a 3 finger grip but with the index finger on the back or side of the blade it will cut just about anything and is very handy and flexible in use.

Congrats. Please post pic's when you get your new Barkie. I would love to see this knife in CF.

I definitely will:thumbup:
I should have it Tuesday or Wednesday, I ordered it yesterday afternoon and they(Crystal Falls Trading Company)shipped it USPS priority yesterday afternoon..talk about service!

Greg,

Getting the 210 is definitely in the back of my mind. I'm a folder guy so I'm going to wait and see how the Barkie works out for me as an EDC, before I take the leap and get another fixed blade. Unless of course a deal shows up on the for sale or trade page that I can't refuse:D

Had to bring this thread back to the top. My new Mini Canadian with CF scales arrived this evening and I snapped a couple pics to show you guys...and gals. Not the best pics, I was in a hurry...I'll take better quality one's when I get my PSK:D

BTW.... I'm going to have a new pouch made up for front pocket carry by Ron at Cutters and Collectors. Looking foward to having a little fixed blade to EDC.
