i have never made a knife before but i have always been interested. I would love to turn this craft into a hobby. I am interested in any info on how i can get started and if this is something a beginner can try on his own.? I would also appriciate any help in learning this art and possibly if someone from british columbia would be willing to teach me.. thank you for your time...

Greeting Islandmike. I have been making blades for only a year and a half and I cant expain how much I enjoy it. Joining this forum is a great start. The next thing I reccomend is jioning a knifemaker guild. There sould be one in BC. Sometimes the guild may have a one day workshop on a simple paring knife and that is all it takes to get hooked.
Two books I would like to reccomend purchasing are THE WONDER OF KNIFEMAKING by Wayne Goddard. and also STEP BY STEP KNIFEMAKING by David Boye. I use these books as refference many times
One other book I just thought of is THE $50 DOLLAR KNIFE SHOP. by Wayne Goddard. These books well show how to make a knife with simple tools like a file and hand drill to forging damascuss. I like to read and have other books on the topic but like these tree the best.

Hello,

I am in Clarksville, TN now and will be in Fayetteville NC in December 05. If you are near you are more than welcome to stop bye and chat, poke around, or work in my shop. I had found great people who let me watch them work and will never forget their generosity..... Just ask politely and you will be suprised that you may do more with them outside the shop than in. I spend most of my time with my friend Kim Breed just BS, hunting, or just hanging out than in the shop.... Kinda llike a bunch of AA guys with all the same Problem... I do have DVDs that you may be interested in... if not just email or call, would enjoy helping anyone out......

BTW.... I am Daniel and I am a Bladesmith-A-Holic

thanks for the quicl response guys that is fantastic. And i will check out and see if we have a knife makers guild.. Also i will purchase those books..
thank you for the offer to come to your shop that would be an experience i would be gratful for, although i am on vancouver island on the west coast of canada, i may take you up on that one day down the road.
What a great site just posted this 20 minutes ago and already have recieved some great help. I am excited about the possiblility of finding a hobby like this for life, thank you so much..

Mike

You live in a beautiful part of the world. We spent our honeymoon travelling around your island. I also grew up in Vancouver.

Have a look around the "Canadian Connection" forum under the "Community" menu at the top of the page. There are a lot of very good makers in Canada though most are scattered across the country east of you :D . I recall seeing posts from makers in the Lower Mainland and I think there is even someone on one of the Gulf Islands. There are also suppliers for most stuff based in Canada so you can avoid the hassles with Canadian Customs. Victoria is big enough that you should be able to get a lot of basic stuff there.

If you are ever in Toronto, try to catch one of the Canadian Knifemaker Guild shows (www.ckg.org). Also drop in at S&R knives at Woodbine Center Mall, just north of the airport. If you talk to Sean or Rodney long enough to show that you are deeply addicted, they may start bringing out the "good stuff" that they keep in the back, or just ask.

There are also some really great makers in the American Pacific Northwest. Nick Wheeler and Raymond Richard come to mind, but there are others. You may be able to arrange a visit with one of them on a cross-border shopping trip.

Enjoy the addiction.

Phil

hey islandmike, I am also on vancouver island, and seem to be in the same shoes as you, how has your adventure been? are you still in the hobby? any assistance you could provide me would be great......I've just started exploring the idea of becoming a knife maker!

I think his last post was 1/16/06... My guess is that his adventure on bladeforum has come to an end.

Hi.
I now live in Kamloops. I enjoy very much helping others with the knife making thing. That's not to say that I know it all. I sure wish I did. I have helped several people just through the mail and by phone. The truth is that this is a terrific site to see, get help, and learn. Everything is covered. It is a self help system and being that knife making is a practical hands on thing you go at your own speed and methods after reading and seeing through pictures how it's done. I only make liner lock folders but believe my past making of hunters would allow me to assist you some.
My first suggestion is to read all the stickies above and hopefully the "Count" will jump in and suggest more great background info. As well, I suggest you read and see the different threads that have been entered. You will soon read what metals to start with and tools that can be used to best advantage. my email is niro@telus.net however as I said this site is a super place to come to. Frank
