I recieved my First HI's today a 15 in AK and a 15 BAS. The AK was substantially bulkier and heftier than the BAS. The AK felt a little better in the hand as well. However for some reason I found the BAS had better penetration into wood than the AK but the AK sent more chips flying if that makes any sense to you guys. As my first HI's I was more than impressed though it did take me a little bit to get the whole "mousepad and sandpaper" thing down. I am still having a tough time sharpening the inside of the curve that way and may switch to a dowell rod.

These things are monsters and Now I am looking to a larger one; much larger? Who knows I would love to get my hands on a 20 incher and see what she does. I guess I am still getting my "form" down for using a khukri and that may explain why the BAS bit deeper than the AK. Has anyone found similar? A foxfolly is what I am lookin for next but does anyone have any other recommendations?

I think my only complaint and its minor is the rust factor, these things stain/rust quick. However I can deal with only payin 45 and 90 for a a pair of knives that feel like they can cut my car in half and still peal my orange.

Your on the right track. I ordered a AK15 first, followed with a Sgt 18" Samsher and a CAK 161/2, AK 18 and finally a Foxy Folly 171/4 26 oz. All within the first month. The FF is perfect for me, but the others I find to my liking as well. I figure I'll have to get about 1/2 dozen more +1 just to be sure.

Flitz polish, or Simichrome will take most of the stains off. If it gets really dirty chopping green wood, I start out with Murphy's Oil Soap, then 0000 steel wool with WD40. After it's clean, I put a coat of Johnson's Paste Wax (floor polish on it). Others swear by Ballistol for rust prevention. Lots of choices.

Some don't bother with the polish, figuring if it's a user, it'll just get that way again.

BTW, welcome to the addiction.

I dont mind the marks, I like em and if they get more that just means I like them and intend on using them more. These def wont be my last, I just epoxied the cracks in the handles as these were blems. I figured blems would be a great start as any sharpening or use mistakes I made would not matter.

Barrabas,

For sharpening you might want to try this trick. Go over to the local Home Depot paint department and ask for a couple of 5 gallon paint stir sticks. Cut about 4 inches of the end of the paint sticks and using household cement glue down 2 layers of "Hobby Foam" (this is available in many colors at any craft store, or the craft section of Wal-Mart). Once the glue has completely dried, cut your sandpaper so that it's the exact same size as your paint stick. Use a can of 3M spray adhesive to spray the back of your sandpaper and affix it to your foam covered paint stick. Now you can hold the knife still and move your sharpening pad (paint stick).

If anyone has questions I can probably post pictures later this evening.

Sean. Sound good and practical. I would like to make one. Pictures might help much. Thanks.

I normally just set the mouse pad on my leg and it seems to work the inside curve just fine.

Now why in the heck didnt I think of that:o. I will give that a go, I had it on the table and trying to use the rounded edge of the table on the mousepad.

I hear some folk even skip the mouse pad and just put the sand paper or belt sander sharpening strips directly on their leg and sharpen on it. I never got to see pics of the process, alas.

Hi there, fellow kuk addicts.
Would one of you kindly souls please help a poor colonial boy and tell me what a "mousepad" is?When I asked at the local hardware shop, all I got was a blank look!Needless to say, I don't speak very good American.
regards et.c & thanks

it's a computer thingy. a pad to run your mouse over, about 3/16 to 1/4 in or 5mm thick foam with a smooth surface for your mouse, generally square with rounded corners. they generally are cheap and even given away with adverts on them. they are just the right springyness when abrasive paper/emery cloth is stuck to them. unless your computer is REALLY old you probably have your hand within inches of one as you read this :) don't use the ergonomic gel ones tho.

Thanks my friend,
It's no wonder I got blank looks at the hardware store!!!Ishould have been in a computer shop, but I have only started using a computer recently (I guess that shows ! ) and as I am using an anti-deluvian laptop I do not have a mousepad handy .I will rectify this deficiency first thing Monday.Thankyou once again and boy-oh-boy,do I feel like a dolt!!!!

Hello again guys!
Speaking of cutting things in half,I have been having heaps of fun of late decapitating used plastic (P.E.T.) soft drink bottles. These will not challenge your kuk,(safety first, watch that follow-through!!!) but by mentally "picking a spot" on the label, you will have incontrovertible proof of your accuracy (or LACK thereof!!) and precision. In N.Z.we also buy milk in plastic (a much softer blend than the P.E.T. used in soft drink bottles, due to milk not being pressurised ) containers,my 18" W.W.II will reliably bisect four (yes,4 !!!) of these two litre (about half a U.S. gallon) with a single swing !!! Better yet,the remaining half of the milk container will remain in place, just begging for another wallop. This will not work with the soft drink bottles as P.E.T. is harder and more springy than the stuff they put milk in.
remember
1 backhand swings ONLY
2 bystanders BEHIND your swing, and WELL CLEAR
3 watch that follow-through

to finish, yes, you will need to fill the container with water, and a confession,,,my used soft drink bottles were actually used CIDER bottles heh heh heh
