While I was looking through the old 110's I keep to validate the 110 data sheet, I found this interesting oldie. The inlays look like micarta but they are not. I took it out to the shop and worked it a bit and can say that they are not buffalo either. They seem to be just plastic. I am inclined to believe that the knife is factory. I vaguely remember its story and who I got it from which leads me to believe Buck made it as a sample or something. Even the sheath is wierd. It looks to be the correct style for this vintage but it is some sort of laminate, designed to look like an animal skin.

Second Version, Variation 3. Stamped on left side with BUCK* Bone hard fiber rear spacer. Separate piece blade rivet and butt rivets integral to RH side.

Does anybody remember one like this on a online auction site about 6 months back? I think it was advertised as micarta and may have been a 2 line stamp though. Made about the time the 112 came out so the thought of it being micarta was not too far fetched.

Joe, I rembember the knife, but I thought it was probably one that had been rehandled. It very well could have been the same as yours. That's the trouble of trying to buy something like that on auction without seeing it or being able to verify that it is the real thing. But I would take yours!!

You know, I have had several generous collectors already make the same offer!
I think I remember who it was that had asked me about the one on auction. I will contact him and see what he remembers.

You should see the other side of the case and the blade. It looks like the blade got a direct hit from an electrical arc, plus it is pretty worn. I only buffed up the one side to try to determine the inlay type.
Nope, not phenolic either. Phenolic likes to burn and turn brown if you buff it too hard. This stuff did not do that. It really did not melt like you would expect plastic to do either though.

It is definitely NOT cellulite! Cellulite is that nasty cottage cheese looking fat that large broads tend to accumulate on the backs of their thighs.:barf:

Cellulose! That's it! My last wife collected clocks; some were made of cellulose... :)

It might be interesting to see if we have any bakelite or celluloid laying around here and work it up in the shop. See if it acts the same way this stuff did.
