"Interesting" prices on Spydercos at local gunstore.

I have to share this with you guys because it is kind of strange. I went to a local gunshop in town that I don't normally like because their prices are high and the staff tends to have a know it all attitude even though they are borderline retarded.

Anyway, I saw a Military in the case and noticed that it was $199. Not too bad considering it is retail and knives are not there thing. The I saw a Para for $199, again no big shock. Then I saw a SS Police, just the plain old Police model you can buy for $75 give or take anywhere. Guess how much, $199. Then I saw a SS Harpy for $199 and I started to get a stomach ache. The general stupidity in that shop is hard to stomach when I am just looking at guns but when I get hit with a double shot of stupid from my other love (knives), I just have to leave.

I was considering buying a new pistol but their prices are just too high. The attitude is just too smug and I didn't feel like hanging around those losers when I waited for the background check. It is pretty bad when a store loses a $500 sale because the staff are so abrassive that all you can think about is getting out of there.

Anyway, why is a SS Harpy the same price as a Military? They must have paid different prices for each of the knives so why are they all the same price? Nevermind that they are all overpriced, I just thought it was weird that they could only think of one price for all the knives.

Perhaps somone just got lazy with the price gun? Hard to imagine that they think every one of those would fetch $200. I don't imagine you'd have asked the clerk why they're all the same price, based on your classification of their knowledge and attitude, but I'm curious what their response would be anyway.

They will not be in business long, unless their store is front for "something else" if you know what I mean.

That's just funny...$199 for everything...:D Ambitious aren't they.;)

No kidding!:D I'd go back and see if they had an original Spyderco/Jess Horn, a CF Walker, or an Evolution Set, also priced at $199. THAT would be an incredible deal!;)

That is what I thought but they have been going strong for years and years. I don't get it as I almost never buy anything from them. I have only bought one thing from them in the last 5 years. It was a gunstock which as soon as I got home, I found on the net for half what they sold it to me for. Just about everything they sell is almost exactly double what you can get it for on the net. I know they are a B&M and have higher costs but I buy from other gunshops in the area and the prices are not nearly as high. Those shops tend to be smaller as well with less traffic. I don't get it.

As for being a "front" for something, there must be at least a grain of truth to that. They are the only gunstore that I know of in the area with a range, that must help pays the bills. I think the owner must have other money he uses to float the operation when it is slow. I don't see how they can pay six guys to stand around and act like jackasses and make money. When I see a group of guys standing around not doing anything.

I had to too see where you were from that sounded like a gunstore close to where I live. The one I am talking about is in Texas though. LOL

I bet part of the problem is that the range gets a bunch of 'high rollers' who like blowing through hundreds of dollars of ammo per session, and hence they are 'price-is-no-option' shoppers. The store doesn't have to charge sensible market rates for things like knives because they know these guys are who butter their bread (which may explain why they're A-holes to regular folks who are actually price-sensitive enough to make considered purchases).

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, now that I know all of my Spydercos are $200 knives.:) ss.

Well, it sure doesn't sound like they're interested in repeat customers. Any guy that buys a SS Harpy or Police Knife at $199 who becomes a Spydie fan is gonna find out what they bring on the open market. They aren't going to be back, and will likely tell some of their friends.

Yep, that is why I don't buy from them often. I got screwed on the first couple of guns I bought from them before I knew better and now I know what prices things should sell for. I am not one of those that expect a B&M store to sell for the same price as online but $199 for a $75 knife is not what I would call fair pricing. They have the right to charge whatever they want to and I have the right not to shop there.

This is one of those store where I don't feel like a heel for going in and wasting the clerk's time so I can check out guns in person. It is not that I don't intend to buy anything but I won't pay over 200% mark-up just to "support" a local store. I will gladly pay a reasonable amount of mark-up at a gunstore. The strange thing is, this store is one of the largest in the area and probably does the most business. You would think that they would have some pretty decent prices. The smaller stores outside of town have better prices on almost everything yet they do a fraction of the business. My only guess is that they have more overhead or are just not as well run. Well, I think it is pretty clear that they are not well run from what I have seen over the years. :(

There's a shop down here in Delray Beach that is like that. I had just bought a GLOCK 22 and went there to use their range to check it out. I browsed their knives and guns, and found EVERYTHING to be outrageously overpriced. They were selling GLOCKs for $60-$100 more than what I paid for mine; they were selling the pistol light that Sure Fire makes for $250! A box of Winchester range ammo: $14.95!!!! And this shop won't let you bring in outside ammo to use!

I had to laugh, knowing that that would be the last time I ever spent money at their shop. The trouble is, though, they've been around a while and probably will continue to be, the bastids. They have a great selection of guns, knives and accessories, but the prices they charge are absurd. (Oh, and they LIE about the "reasons" for forbidding outside ammo, by the way; so for that reason alone, I won't go back.)
