We are not talking about metal workers who are exposed to zinc oxide fumes every day all day lone here. The statements often posted are about a person burning off a single piece of metal and telling them that it is extremely toxic and may kill them. This is not true.
As I regularly say, proper ventilation, a fan blowing from behind you, and a good respirator is the proper protection.
On a side note, I don't recall ever knowing a life long welder who wasn't an alcoholic to some degree. Hmm, I wonder if there is a connection there?
My childhood friend's dad was a welder for 40+ years. He could sign his name with a welding rod after consuming 12 beers ( usually before lunch) … but he could barely function sober.
