Dan,

I grew up further south of you, we used any kind of cream to keep air from the bites, I bet your co-workers have some tips too.

Poison Ivy we used to "cure" with fresh Urine.

I'm gathering that is not something you find in one of the isles of the organic food stores ? :D You know you have a true friend when he'll wiz on your poisen ivy for ya!

Thanks for the link, Yvsa.....made me itch just reading it......

Man....I took a shower and scrubbed the "sock area" of my lower legs real good after getting the bites. Pretty sure there are no live ones on me. But the nice hard welts they left behind sure do inspire the fingernails.....good thing I clipped 'em!

After coming back from Summer Camp in N. Carolina with 30+ chigger bites, I did some research. It seems they are gone before the itch starts, so the old fingernail polish bit I learned as a kid is no longer suggested. Campho- Phenique (camphorated phenol) was suggested by the local druggist in N.C. and seemed to help. The internet hits suggest over-the-counter steriods. DEET is supposed to keep them off. People in bad chigger country dust their yards with 5% Sevin powder. You have my sincere sympathy.

Nooo I have too much back hair to get PI on the back, I used to get it on legs arms, and hands. Actually I havent' gotten it for years

**Knock on wood**

We used to scarf up our wives old pantyhose to use as an underlayer in chigger country.

Honest honey...that's why there was a pair in the car's glovebox...

Panthose works?

The chiggers aren't small enough to get through?

I do remember when Mt St. Helens went off, people tied panty hose over the air intakes on auto engines to keep the ash out.

what were you guys talking about?
I wuz gonna say that if everyone met in Arkansaw at Damiel's hut fer X-mas thet yu'd find out whut chiggers wuz den, but it'd be too dayumed cold fer 'em den. Dammit! :p ;)

Chiggers aren't actually there anymore when they are itching. It is a bite. They secrete saliva into the the bite and it hardens into a column. Anti itch cream is the best thing for them until your body breaks down the column. Takes about a week. Of course, if you get them in your clothes or shoes, they will bite you again when you put them on. Nasty little devils...chiggers.

Takes a week unless you're like me and keep iching and then picking off the scabs... they last months on me... :barf:

If'n ya think chiggers are bad, try getting a good dose of seed ticks (the larvae stage of Lone Star ticks). You can get hundreds of them on ya. They look like a small freckle moving. :) And when they bite, you itch like mad!

Olde timey remedies include a hot soapy bath to relieve the irritation, strong alcohol on the bite, then brushless shaving cream both as a preventative and salve to lessen the itching. Reportedly rubbing the wrists, neck, ankles and waist with kerosene discourages the little red bugs (as well as your loved ones). Also dry sulfur dust on your clothing.

Slightly more modern remedies have included ammonia water, a paste of baking soda and water, and calamine lotion. (I've tried the last two, and then they tell you not to itch -- of course "they" don't have chiggers).

You might also try hydrocortisone 1% anti-itch cream, and copious amounts of Glenlivet. If none of the above do it, there's always the GRS solution .
