Interesting thread and challenge!

Cougar, your stun gun went out today, via Priority Mail. Have fun with it, and let us know the results, I for one will be waiting.

Just FYI, they are illegal in Canada, so that is why we aren't sending one to Cliff. We also have the addresses of a few other volunteers, so 2 other people will be getting stun guns to test.

Make sure you use fresh batteries...

In complex issues like the physiological response to electric current it is wise to avoid placing too much faith in simple models. Mother nature is the ultimate arbiter. She has proven me wrong many times when I thought I knew what was going to happen. Besides, I may have forgotten the simple models. It’s been several years since I taught freshman physics labs.

I will be looking forward to reading the results when they are posted by Cougar and the other testers.

Another personal anecdote. When my buddy and I were taking high school physics we were captivated by the electrical forces we were studying. We built a half wave rectifier out of an old vacuum tube, and used it to charge a large capacitor bank. The capacitors were perhaps 2"x6"x12" each. I don’t remember the capacitance, but we had about 10 of them hooked up in parallel. I think we were well over 1 farad. We used to charge up the bank and then toss a wire across the contacts. The capacitor bank would discharge with a sound like a gunshot. One day my buddy wasn’t paying close attention to what he was doing and discharged the capacitor bank across his hand. In this case, the current flow was in and out of two closely ( about 3") spaced points on his hand. His subjective report was that he felt like a horse had kicked him in the side. His arm and shoulder were sore for several days. Although I wanted to study the phenomenon in more depth, my friend would not consent to subsequent tests.

Where's the KaBoom? There was supposed to be an earth-shatering KaBoom

It does not concern stun guns but it does concern electricity.

I had one of those little electronic expirementers kits that Radio Shack sells. When I was about 8 or 9 I decided to use this to connect a 9 volt battery to the primary of a small transformer. I happened to be touching the leads when they made contact. Big Mistake. The battery charged the primary and when it was charged it decided to dump a S@#% of current back across the battery, and my hand. That hurt worse than touching an electric fence.

Ok, I started the thread and it exploded.

Stun guns and such are funny because we don't want to get shocked but aren't sure about effectiveness. We haven't mentioned the context of usage and my original pt was to get out the names of the brands of the best models because if we are going to get an electronic weapon let's get the best.

I won't debate the power of power lines and simply put I think a stunner should have power similar to lightning. Contextually, it's not for me, that's my preference. I understand the LEO application for non lethality but again that is not for me.

Presently, the Air Taser is a good model as well as others Mike has mentioned. FWIW, I knew someone who made a stun gun out of a 9V battery and an empty butane lighter.

Again I ask for context, not 'stick your arm out and see if this hurts' but 'he has a knife/bat etc. and you have a stun gun so what will you do?'

That's it.

Peace,
smoke

Who are the other 2 people Spark? Or is that a secret? Am I already listed as one or is it too late to sign up?

I have to get in contact with you folks personally because there are a few details I would like to discuss before agreeing to this experiment. But in about a week, I'm going to have enough free time on my hands to do this. If you need anything else from me, please e-mail me.

SB,

Call me.

1-800-969-7771. We can discuss the test and how it is to be done.
