Interesting Tomahawk Oxblood Sheath - American Tomahawk Company?

Thank You. Great to know the Cold Steel is the closest to the original. Looking closer at the CS Tomahawk I bought it looks like it is sharpened under the spike end. Is this normally how they were made.

Living in Thailand there are lots of secondhand stores where they import containers from Japan. Mostly Junk but occasionally I find some good stuff. Found an old Japanese long straight handled ???(looks like an axe handle) but with a Huge Round 2 ft wood Head. Looks like it might have been used to ring a Temple Bell??? The head was cracked so I just cut it off and saved the handle. Only paid $3. The handle has a beautiful straight tight grain (thinking cedar) and is slightly oval shaped (beautiful wood). It fits perfectly in my hand! I think I might like to try using the handle on the UC. I like to have fun with stuff! I will post photos of the Japan handle later to see what you guys think about possibly using it for a Tomahawk handle. Thanks again!
 
I have never seen the sharpening under the spike come in that far. The previous owner must have messing around

Here are photos of the handle I bought yesterday. In the Seconhand shop all the items are from Japan. I like to look for discarded items that are no longer being used and repurpose them and give them a new life. Normally I would not even look at old wood handles but my new interest in Tomahawks got me to take a closer look. The shop also had piles of Japanese tools - small hand saws with rattan wrapped handles were very cool. I saw this long handled axe looking with big round mallet looking head and took a closer look. I quickly bought it and used one of the japanese saw to cut off the head (it was cracked). Strange how the Japan hand saw cut on the backstroke. Handle has a beautiful straight grain, extremely light and quick in the hand, but looks very strong.

So what do you guys think of this handle. Would it be OK to use to rehandle one of the Tomahawks!

Nice straight grained haft but I think it may be fir. Probably wouldn't use it on a tomahawk. Cold steel may still sell them.
 
The lightweight of the wood was a concern. Originally I thought it was Cedar or possibly even White Ash but I think you are Right - Most Likely Douglas Fir and not strong enough for a Tomahawk Handle. Thanks for taking a look!

I'm getting the feeling that spending more time on this forum is going to be dangerous. I keep seeing Tomahawks that I like and... I want More!
 
bbk, If the Japanese put that handle on an "long handled axe" I would think it would be OK for a shorter handled hawk. I get a catalog of Japanese tools, seems that I remember a lot of red or white oak being used in Japan. Hard to believe they would put a weak piece of wood on an axe they made. John
 
Thanks to everyone for taking a look. In the photos the wood appears more orange than it is in person. It's more of light cream color. Handle was not finished so I took a little sandpaper just to expose the wood color and grain. I will try to take some better photos and post later. Many of the Japanese Small Hand Saws in the Secondhand shop also had wood handles but the wood looked more uniform in color and no pronounced visible grain. I am new to Tomahawks and Axes and wood handles so I have not got a clue what I am looking at.
 
I am learning that American Hickory is the Best wood for Axe and Tomahawks handles?
