Cool fix, that's something to be proud of! It's always a good feeling knowing that you can take care of yourself and your family without having to rely (too much) on others.
And yeah, like others have been saying, Micarta was developed for electrical insulators for power transmission lines, IIRC. And that old kitchen standby, Formica, stands for FORmally MICArta.
