Interesting Video - Average User?

Just to add. Forward is not incorrect at all. Just slower.

That's what I figured, and I find it easier to keep the angle on the blade during sharpening. Back and forth just feels "wrong" to me.

I wonder how often people who worry about the finish on their knives actually use their knives. ALL of my pocket knives have scratches because they all get used. I’m sure they’re a lot more scratched up then he can manage with a wire brush.

I spend less time on my edges than this guy. They’re sharp as hell but I can’t tell you how they look. I don’t really care how they look. They work and that’s all I care about.

Knife abuse, you mean like this?:D The bottom pic is how the knife originally looked. lol. Still, Cliff has lots of knowledge in knives, I would never discount anything he says when it comes to knife geometry, edge geometry or steel. He has tested more knives than 99.99% of the knife population.

He was banned for being blunt and argumentative. Hi banning had more to do with arguing with knifemaker mods, who banned him. I remember the thread and do not remember any insults by him to any individual. His banishment was one of the few that I disagree with. While I did not agree with everything Cliff said, he made lots of good points and he was a positive contributing member as well as having saved many people money from buying crap knifes. He did abuse knives and that has never been popular with most knife makers, lol. Regardless, what he did to the knife above is criminal, lol.

Cliff was not banned because of one thread. He was banned for years of misinformation, arrogance, narcissism, rudeness and stupidity. He had plenty of warning and walked the plank willingly. He treated some knifemakers with such disrespect and sowed so much misinformation that this forum lost some knifemaker members that were top notch.

Vid you'd recommend the "right" way to sharpen, and or link to bestest thread on the topic? I have the same stone as the OP vid, but try to use a smoother longer stroke when sharpening, but always happy to improve my approach/techniques too.

Sorry I don't watch videos on sharpening. I believe ther's more than one "right" way and the number of opinions and sharpening tools shows that to b true. You need to find what works for you.

I use the Sharpmaker standard setup with diamond rods. This gives a consistent edge with little chance of scratches unless you drink and sharpen :) Some knives I go 40 degrees, some 30 with a few swipes at 40. I also sharpen freehand using a Case Washita stone and their Hard Arkansas stone supplemented with a DMT coarse hand hone. For convex edges and fun :) I use 400, 600 & 800 sandpaper on top of a thin layer of cardboard resting on wood.

arrogance? yes, narcissism? I would not know and neither would you, rudeness? I can agree that his direct obtuse manner could be seen as such. Stupidity? Why because you disagree with him. Misinformation? I am sure we all spread some misinformation at some point. But consistently? NO. At the end of the day anything describing Cliff coming from you should be taken with a gigantic grain of salt.
Think about it, you were arguing with him when you were a baby on this forum and you spent much of your time attacking cliff. I almost wonder if you didn't just join to troll Cliff back in the day because it sure could be taken that way.

Who joins and within 9 months is arguing with someone who by that time had tested several dozen knives at the very least with extensive writeups, something unheard of back then. In fact you went out of your way to make comments in threads where you had nothing positive to add. Maybe those identifiers you mentioned don't just belong to him. Here is some history of what has happened between you and him and there is much more. Someone such as you who spent so much time attacking him early in your BF life probably should not be the one calling the kettle black.

And then there was a criticism of you and your ignorance(not my words, spyderco forum member words). Yet in this case the knifemaker moderator did not mind your apparently ignorant posting(not my words, but spyderco forum member words). Seems to me like you could have been banned as well except in this case the knifemaker mod decided not to say BYE to you. In cliff's case they did.

At the end of the day, he was banned, it is done and over. His work is still valid and he has certainly contributed more to the knife world than you or I. I am not a friend of his nor am I an enemy, heck he could be a douche in his personal life, I don't know. I don't care about his personal opinions nor did I agree with everything he did, but I do believe his work was valid and well done.

That wire brush. It was like watching a tutorial video on swimming where the first thing the instructor shows you is him slapping himself several times before getting in the pool

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Your selections are a good reminder of why Cliff's "science" isn't to be trusted.
