How much extra does it normally cost to ship a knife to Canada, using USPS as the carrier. I have used their on-line calulator to figure cost and the figure I get for Flat rate priority mail seems quite high to me.
Do I need to use their International Mail for Canada since they are bordering us.

Its pretty costly, usually about $23 with insurance. One other pitfall is to work out how your customer wants it listed. If you insure the package for $500 and list it as a purchase they will charge a import fee which can be big. I list as a gift and have not been charged.

The Priority Mail Flat-Rate Box is $23.95 but the Priority Mail Flat-Rate Envelope is only $9.95. Insurance is an additional dollar or two. You might also want to look at sending it as a First-Class Mail International package that is charged by the ounce. I don't know how much your piece weighs but a couple of sample prices are 8-ounces $2.86, 12-ounces $3.81, 1 pound $4.76. It's in the Canada section of the International Mail Manual. Most of these prices are changing in January.

^ +1 as a CDN thats what i like .

oh and please never ever use UPS. They charge high shipping costs, in addition to a $40 "[processing fee" , and then there is duties on top of that. A $100 blade can suddenly become a 300 $ blade.

Thanks for the help I appreciate it. Looks like its going to be sent First-Class Mail International. The heads up on sending it as a gift is great to know.
As for UPS I quit using them a while back, costly and hard on their packages.
