Winston Branko Churchill loved the purity of the outdoors.

I read somewhere that every year 100's of people migrate to Alaska to "find themselves"
Stressed out stockbrokers having midlife crisis's:confused:

Some of them try their hand at the hobo life
Riding the trains across America
Free from society and all it's rules
Many of them die or lose limbs in the process

Maybe he died in peace
I think in the very very final stages of starvation you get a "peaceful glow"/buzz, "they say"..................

There's better ways to get your point across. You're not going to change the hearts and minds of a billion people by doing something stupid. All he had to do was focus on himself, and live his OWN life according to the dictates of his own conscience. If he wanted to be nice to people great! Do it, and set the example. He might have been discouraged that he expected the impossible dream- to be able to put into clear language what has never been accepted by everyone. I don't feel bad for him at all. I feel bad for all the questions that people are going to throw at his family, they don't deserve that. Sure glad he had his dope with him, though... /rolleyes/

When I made a major career change in my late 30s I took a four month trip through Alaska and Northern Canada. I spent several weeks in the wilderness but took a canoe load of provisions and equipment.

Too bad that fellow was so disturbed that he did such a sad thing.

Doesn't parallel into the wild at all, that kid was just sick of all of society's bullshit-he wasn't trying to make a point, just get away. This guy killed himself by getting drugged up in the mountains to try to show others they should be one with nature.

Two guys, both a little jacked up in the head, both not quite prepared for what they're getting into, go out into the wilderness alone and die. Seems like some of the aspects are similar.

on one hand i can see the "get the heck out of society" aspect of it.....because lets be honest here, our society truly does suck big time.

on the other hand, a little more planning, supplying, and edumacating himself might have been a bit better..

The odd thing is how much he and I have in common. I think I am a melt down (that I don't think is coming) away from this dude. Philosophy, Disk Jockey, stuff like that... creepy.

I think it easy to sit in our comfortable chairs and talk shit about a guy who actually went and did something. Most men, as the poet said, live thier lives in quiet desperation.

OK, so he wanted people to become less materialistic and to connect more with nature. You want to know what I took away as the key points of that article? You have to EAT, and there is a BIG difference in being lost in the woods, and being lost in yourself.

Needless death is always... uh... Needless. Chris McCandless (Into the Wild guy) got himself into a bad situation that he couldn't figure out how to get out of. He wanted to leave and seek help, but the river was to fast/high, and he had no idea how to get across. This guy, Winston Churchill, sounds like he purposefully orchestrated his own demise. Two very different ways to go. Although I personally consider both plans/situations to be reckless and stupid, I feel more for McCandless than Churchill.

Sometimes, one doesn't realize they've contracted the sickness of crazy until it's too late. Sometimes, one may never realize they're they're completely nuts.

Wow, rough story. Seems like he was a very lonely fellow. Too bad it had to end that way.

Everything about that screams "suicide" to me.
Neatly arranged poles at the top of his head.
Told family to stop sending him care packages, that he didn't need them anymore.
Family history of maladaptive behavior.
His own attempt at suicide before. Studies have shown that if a person tries it once, they're very likely to try it again.
Saw his dream coming unraveled.
Also sounds like he was in heavy denial: "I think I'll just go open up another coffee shop."
Then into the "people should learn to do without money, I'll be a martyr for that." Frame of mind.

I'd even be willing the bet the pills were antidepressants.

I think the guy just got sick of living.

The bent pole and the miner's shack?

Maybe he had a change of heart and it was just too late.

I feel kinda sorry for the guy, I'd say he had a genuine psychological problem.

But I don't agree with the romance that people are giving his "story". You don't play around with Ma Nature. She kicks little birds outta nests and doesn't think twice about it. She definitely won't lose sleep over starving a neurotic Disc Jockey to death.

Just my .02

Haha he was pissed of about materialism, and owned a coffee house with a fancy espresso machine?????? Thats kinda ironic...

To each his own, Im in no position to judge the dude... Maybe moronic, but who am I to say, I kinda see his point about wanting to sort out his life, and what better place to do it? Arrgghh... I dunno. He had the chance to be better prepared, but turned away his supplies. So that tells me he had put some planning into it, so he chose his fate. Chris Mcandless didnt choose his fate. He underestimated mother nature, and ended up dying for it. This guy seemed pretty well versed in the outdoors, avid skier/mtn biker etc...I believe he just chose to off himself. Which means some mental ilness is present.

Anyways, to each his own IMO. Let man be man and make his own way. Whicever way that may be.

Good point...we choose our own path. Sometimes easy to sit back and armchair quarterback the lives of others.

I dont think any of you know shit about either one of these people. Maybe they dont give a shit about death, because they know there is really no such thing. Maybe most of you are in fear of death, and are to pussy to try to live in mother nature? Who knows?

"Sure glad he had his dope with him, though... /rolleyes/"

-you mean the plant that was used for 50% of all medicine until the 1800's? You mean the plant that has the strongest fibres known to man? You mean the plant that is worth more than gold in weight? You mean the plant that has killed not one person? I am interested in why you dislike this plant..please??? Please dont tell me its the corporate media making your decisions...?

"Two guys, both a little jacked up in the head" "I'd say he had a genuine psychological problem" "Which means some mental ilness is present"

From Wiki:
- "in his 1976 book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind; he proposed that until the beginning of historic times, schizophrenia or a similar condition was the normal state of human consciousness."

-"Researchers into shamanism have speculated that in some cultures schizophrenia or related conditions may predispose an individual to becoming a shaman; the experience of having access to multiple realities is not uncommon in schizophrenia, and is a core experience in many shamanic traditions. Equally, the shaman may have the skill to bring on and direct some of the altered states of consciousness psychiatrists label as illness."

"Haha he was pissed of about materialism, and owned a coffee house with a fancy espresso machine?????? Thats kinda ironic..."

-seems like maybe he was trying to live like the sheeple, and clone robot army, but being a wage slave for monetary gain obviously didnt work well with him. Lets beat him down for trying, and also beat him down for not? Life is about learning, seems like he saved himself actually, by not conforming as long as the submissive sheeple tend to do...and spend years and years in depression because of the wage slave lifestyle.
