Into The Wild II? (Rocky Mt. Edition)

The guy was just a mentally ill pot head. He was not on a deep, philosophical quest, and his worldview of collectivism is an objective failure that only brings human suffering. He was just an untreated, or improperly treated mentally ill person, and thats sad.

Dudes - the difference between this kid and Horace Kephart is a matter of degrees - he abandoned 11 children to become a recluse - and we worship him for it.

This guy was mentally ill. Too bad nobody thought enough to try and get him help, instead, they let him go on his wanderings and die. Nothing "noble" in what happened to him.

I've taken several time-outs in my life and career and wandered the globe working for NGOs. I've seen plenty of evil in the world, but it didn't make me want to 'check out' like this guy.

I think people have the right to die the way they want to... beats sucking on a 12ga & family members finding a mess. To each his own..you can waste your life behind a desk and make those around you just as unhappy or go wander down the road and never come back... slow & painful way to go though.... his issues was deeper that wanting to find freedom

Tony... you know - I think I would take a dozen of these guys for each of the 'I hate my job - I come home more miserable every day' people that I see coming home every night.

TF

I dont think any of you know shit about either one of these people. Maybe they dont give a shit about death, because they know there is really no such thing. Maybe most of you are in fear of death, and are to pussy to try to live in mother nature? Who knows?

"Sure glad he had his dope with him, though... /rolleyes/"

-you mean the plant that was used for 50% of all medicine until the 1800's? You mean the plant that has the strongest fibres known to man? You mean the plant that is worth more than gold in weight? You mean the plant that has killed not one person? I am interested in why you dislike this plant..please??? Please dont tell me its the corporate media making your decisions...?

"Two guys, both a little jacked up in the head" "I'd say he had a genuine psychological problem" "Which means some mental ilness is present"

From Wiki:
- "in his 1976 book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind; he proposed that until the beginning of historic times, schizophrenia or a similar condition was the normal state of human consciousness."

-"Researchers into shamanism have speculated that in some cultures schizophrenia or related conditions may predispose an individual to becoming a shaman; the experience of having access to multiple realities is not uncommon in schizophrenia, and is a core experience in many shamanic traditions. Equally, the shaman may have the skill to bring on and direct some of the altered states of consciousness psychiatrists label as illness."

Was there a point to that first paragraph, aside from displaying a combative and arrogant attitude?

"Haha he was pissed of about materialism, and owned a coffee house with a fancy espresso machine?????? Thats kinda ironic..."

-seems like maybe he was trying to live like the sheeple, and clone robot army, but being a wage slave for monetary gain obviously didnt work well with him. Lets beat him down for trying, and also beat him down for not? Life is about learning, seems like he saved himself actually, by not conforming as long as the submissive sheeple tend to do...and spend years and years in depression because of the wage slave lifestyle.

Im not "beating" anyone down bro. Just found some irony in that part of the article.

I have alot of the same views as you expressed as far as being a wage slave, and conforming to societies "norms". Makes me sick. Twitter your facebook updates to the next american idol star.... :barf: My point is I think every man should make his own path. If he wants to off himself its certainly not my bussiness to preach to him. I live the way I want. Simply. I find contentment in it.

Im all for raging against the machine, and free thinking. If its not your bag, I will not push my thoughts and ideals onto others. Its the way I live, and the way I raise my sons. To question authority, and make their own path. All I can hope for is that I taught them enough to make sound decisions, and to know when to ask for guidance or help.

Just my bag baby.

As far as this Churchill fellow, we can only hope he found what he was looking for. I wonder what that journal held. Maybe the ramblings of a disturbed person, or maybe some very insightfull ideas.... In the end he chose his path. I dont agree with it persay, but whatever...

nope, just voicing mine as everyone else voices theirs. thanks for reading

No. The difference is that the others are discussing reasonably and don't engage in personal insults upon other members. That is unacceptable behavior here in W&SS. Address the topic, share your opinion, but don't sling crap at other members in the process.

Yeah we did with our kids....Unfortunately the first person whose authority they question is your own :D :D

Guy did what he did. Not much harm or fowl, except causing some suffering and questioning on the part of his family. At least he didn't fall into the current fashion of going into civilization and taking out a few souls with him in a rampage. Some folks beat to their own drum.

-funny, i got personaly insulted...that's why i voiced my opinion...obviously you dont agree, and have absolutley nothing to add about the subject. You call what others are saying "reasonable" only because it didnt offend you. I am sorry that i dont march in the same army...if everyone is thinking the same thing, someone's not thinking at all.

That was not an insult, that was an observation.

You started throwing out blanket insults in your very first post in this thread, I do not see where you were insulted previous to that post.

I did not state my opinion, so you do not know what I agree and disagree with. I will post my own opinion when I feel like I have coherent thoughts put together on the subject.

I said "discussing reasonably," not as an evaluation of the opinions expressed, but as a characterization of how the discussion was going.

And I don't care what you do personally or about marching armies. A healthy forum is built on respectful interactions. Many discussions happen where people agree to disagree without getting personal. Tact goes a long way.

Feel free to respond, but to save you time, know that I will not read it. Proceed as you wish.

ETA: Alas, I am remorseful. I was a bit cranky yesterday and came off a bit abrasive. Anyway, my comments still stand, but to put it more gently, I just think you'd have a more enjoyable time here in W&SS if you just toned it down a bit. I know lots of people have strong views, but we can choose how to present them so that they don't deliberately offend others. This helps stimulate good discussions and keeps the place from turning into just another nasty forum. I like W&SS because people are generally respectful of each other; they want to teach others and be taught by others. I don't want to see that change, and I'd like to see you stick around and contribute. That's all .

Well ... I could walk out my door and get killed by a garbage truck. Last view alive being the grill of a Mack truck.
He died doing something most only dream about. Great way to go when it's time!
Mountains are a little slice of Heaven and a great last sight.

I am sorry to hear of his demise but appreciate that he did not leave his dog in the wild. I do wonder what kind of kit he was carrying.

Mentally ill suicidal guy starves to death in the woods after telling friends to stop bothering to send him food. Sad that he was unhappy and had a short life, not sure what it has to do with "wilderness and survival skills."

This would almost be cute if it wasn't chocked full of ignorance.

The article about the hiker going off and living/dying in Colorado got me thinking. I think we all have that dream of going out and living off the land or going out on our own and surviving in the bush. Until the world reminds most of us that we are responsible for others lives as well. I have gone out on my own in the brush for a very long time. I think people do this type of thing to be free...I know I did. When they realize they are just a slave to another beast.

Instead of "slaving" 9 to 5 or whatever and "conforming" to society's rules and taxes. Your "slaving" to just eat, stay warm, have clean water, have a reasonable means of shelter. I find it fun to go backwards sometimes and live off the land and know that I can do it. But find that the whole reason we are where we are now is because life like he chose is hard and unforgiving. Not that life in a "modern" society doesnt have its hardships. Just different kinds. The worlds going to make you some kind of "slave" in my opinion. Nothing is free. Whether its going to work everyday to provide, or leaving your shelter in the morning for food, water and fuel. Very few have everything handed to them and if it is....its on the backs of others.

Sorry for my ramble. I just have issue with the term "free". I find any time I am free from one thing I am a slave to something else because of it. Its just what you chose.

I understand your issue with the term "free." I also have an issue with the term "slave." Someone once told me "What your attention is on is what you get." So if you're attention is on being a slave to society, then that's what you get. We do get to make choices in what we do and how we view what we do. Sometimes I do find myself slipping into the "slave" mentality regarding one thing or another. Then something usually comes along that breaks that cycle. Then the cycle starts again. Just how my brain works.
