Intro & Am I the only one that can't/wont switch from pocket to clip carry?

For me, clipped knives catch on things when I least want them to like getting in and out of a car. So, I have to think about it every time if I have a knife clipped to my pocket.

I hear that one a lot, but how are people managing it?
I don't own a car, so I get less "in and out of car" practice, yet I never snag on anything, whether as a passenger or driver.
I also don't bash into walls, counters, or the other things people talk of.

I guess if I switched to track pants with zipper pockets, then I wouldn't need a clip. :D

I've had the exact opposite experience. Pocket-carry only for me.

Which mean clipless carry makes sense in your situation.

Of course, sometimes a clip just sucks...my Skirmish didn't get much carry because the stock clip didn't hold it in the pocket very well.
I recently switched to a different clip (titanium, too :)), and I can hang upside down without it coming loose.

Maybe you'd be interested in signing my petition for every clipped folder ever to come with the G&G Hawk Grip Clip? ;)

I just recently switched over to traditionals so I am now clip-less as well. Even before the change I had started taking the clip of of my more modern folders. I think some of this has to due with the fact that the size of the folders I bought was beginning to shrink and my perceived need to access and deploy a folding knife in a flash began to disappear also. So far, I don't miss the clip, but I haven't lost one yet either ;)

Your not alone, I find clips to be functionally flawed, their great for clipping a knife to something like a pants pocket but to me they get in the way while using a knife. After all the main function of a knife is to cut, pierce and slice material, not to be carried. I skin deer and clean game with a folder, try doing that with one that is clipped its a pain the rump, it prevents one from getting a true feel of the blade and your work and also a real handle on the knife, IMO. Moreover, I find them to be ugly, and a detraction from the aesthetic lines of a knife. Again, IMO its like someone who put a giant hump on the knife blade and then drilled a giant hole in it, WTF. Apparently I'm way on the outs on this as the manf. that does this enjoys wild success and has a huge fan base here on the forums. I just don't get it, its kind of like putting a screen door on a submarine, who would intentionally punch out a huge hole in the knife blade, the hump, the huge blade profile above the handle line. All things that just don't compute to me, much like the clip. Who on earth would put a wiry piece of metal on the outside of a knife handle that prohibits one from maximum handle purchase and grip. I want my knife to be more comfortable when I'm using it, then when I'm carrying it. Plus no one needs to know what I have on my person, other than the obvious clothes on my back. Just my take, and yes I'm aware I'm the odd man out with this opinion so easy with the blow torches. I take all the clips off all my knives as soon as I buy them, I've even had STR here on the forums make me a custom frame lock without a pocket clip, it also didn't have a relief cut but thats a functional argument for another day.

Because it is incredibly efficient at opening the knife.
If you just want to look at your knife rather than use it, it may not be for you. ;)

If everyone liked the same type of knife, they might be harder to find and more expensive, so I'm glad people like different things.

The first clip that I felt "got in the way" was a SOG Vulcan that I picked up. It also hurt your hands if you are using a knife hard. I thought the knife too large for me and when they came out with the Mini-Vulcan, I bought one. But frankly, the clip still hurts the hands and for me if it is clipped to a front pants pocket (usually on the outside edge), it rubs on my car seats. Actually ripped a hole in my car seat with a clip. Hence, if I wear a clipped knife, I pay attention. But I shouldn't have to pay attention. It's supposed to be convenient and fun.

I am amongst those that used to carry in the pocket until I tried my first clipped folder.

No day since then has my knife rattled again at the bottom of the pocket. Always clipped now. Flashligts, tools, knives...

I even mod all my Multitools and add some sort of clip to carry them clipped as well.

Only exception are SAKs and small keychain MTs (Micra, Squirt, Dime...)

I used to carry a knife clipped to my right pocket. I scratched the hell out of my car door twice. I thought to my self that I should just be more aware and so I quit scratching my doors. Then one day I pulled my keys from my pocket, thankfully I was sitting in the car, and out went my Techno. Gone for months as I didn't realize where I had lost it. I committed at that point to never clip a knife again. I did find that knife behind the seat.

Later I came to realize that a knife in my pocket is a pain. Scratching my phone, tangled in my keys, etc. I started clipping my knives IWB at around 4 o'clock. Wow, who would have ever thought of this? The knife is comfortable, out of the way, and I just forget about it. Never a chance of losing it either.

I guess it may be harder to deploy, and if I was constantly using it would get old fast, but it works for me.

Me too and the side of my pickup below the tool box as I use it for a table to work off of. Hence I frequently get very close to the vehicle writing notes and so forth on jobs. I can think of many reasons not to use a clip. But I still do at times.

I have been thinking of the Gayle Bradley Air as a gentlemans folder lately. In a YouTube interview with Mr Bradley he had said Spyderco opted not to use a clip but it had been on the table at some point I think.

I personally cant stand pocket carry. Having my keys bunched up in my pocket is enough without a knife in the mix too. Clipped carry has never caused any problems for me as far as losing a knife goes, and out of habit I'm always careful about my car door.

I'd buy an Air in a heartbeat if they came with a clip , but sadly they don't .
