Ok, a few weeks ago I was able to score one of the villager Sarges that were floating around. It was just what I was looking for. A nice rough finished knife that I could finish myself over the long boring winter here at work. When I got it I was very happy with it.
I start looking it over to decide what to do with it. I notice a fracture in the edge right at the tip. Maybe a quarter of an inch back. It looked like Bura got the edge too hot or cooled it too quickly (or whatever magic you metal workers do to knives). Anyway, some light pressure to the side of the tip confirmed it. SNAP. The first 1/4" of the tip broke off along with a chunk of the false edge.
I emailed Yangdu with my problem. I told her the knife was pretty much trashed. i couldn't fix it. I don't have a grinder..yet (Ya hear that, Santa?) I told her that i could send the knife back if she wanted it, but it was a routine boo boo. Nothing that Bura's nose had to be rubbed in. She told me to keep the knife and that she would send me another. Excellent service:) ..as usual.
So now I have this Sarge with no tip and I'm getting a new knife coming my way. I remember that I have this friend that really might like to have the very first Sarge "oopsie". For some reason he likes these little blades. I'm not gonna say who unless he decides to speak up.
Anyway, I send him a note saying. "I have this busted knife that I can't fix because i'm ignorant and lazy. I'm getting a new one, would you like to have it?"
He says "Sure!" and off it goes to him. A few days later I get an email from him and it says something to the effect "I've just about got the Sarge reground. It looks like it's been demoted. Would that make it a Corporal? It has a drop point blade now, the thin guard has been replaced with one made from a spoon, and the pine handle is now antler...i'm sending it out to you tomorrow."
Dang it! You try to do something nice for some people;)
Anyway, here it is. The Corporal:
(please forgive the pic quality. I kept hitting the wrong button when i snapped the pic. it kept zooming on my coffee table instead of the knives. At least you can kind of see what it looks like. I'll take some better pics when I have a little more time.)

Here it is on the right of my trusty and well loved Sarge/KPH

I know the knife is blurry and has a flash to it. I was trying to get the tip to show up a little better. Like I said, i took these pics 10 mins before I had to be at work.

A better veiw of its beefy guard.
The only modification that I have done to it is sharpen it to a razor's edge and regrind the swedge to be fully sharpened but thick. There was also a hole in the antler that I filled with waterproof wood sealer and super glue. I REALLY like this knife. It was an excellent gift from a very nice person. As a matter of fact, i see it taking over for my old Sarge/KPH as my EDC. This one's going to the kids one day...maybe. I might just have them bury me with it;) A treasure to be sure.

Be sure and check you state knife laws... A LOT of states have stupid laws against blades sharpened on both sides...Not about OWNING them, but about CARRING them...

Thanks for the reminder:thumbup: However, i believe that Indiana as a whole is pretty laid back on knives. As I've said before, this is a legal is as legal does kind of design. It's not tactical or threatening in anyway. The good news is that I am a workaholic that lives 5 miles from my office. It's a work knife for the warehouse here, really. So the only place it sees the public light of day is the flat between my butt and truck seat. Private at home and a private owned office any other time. As long as I don't go packing it through the malls or waving it around in WalMart (when i have to go there), Then I oughta be OK. I do appreciate the thought, though. Thank you.

One thing that I forgot to mention was that the fixer-upper of this knife improved upon the thumb pad area. I wish this little darlin' had showed up before Thanksgiving instead of after. It would have been a lifesaver peeling all of those potatoes.

Jake? Nice knife, but no grinder?

A belt sander removes metal too, and I know you have one of those... :foot:

Just opened an antler Sarge today. Neat curve to the handle. WooHoo!

Good stuff Jake, that looks like a real keeper all right

However, a certain somebody we know had best keep out of his wife's silverware drawer, she'll sooner or later notice there's some spoons missing. Also gotta wonder if that there handle is geenyouwine poached antler. :p :D

Sarge

Nessmuk Sarg?? Very nice...
IIRC Hollowdweller had a real sweethheart made for him.
Ergonomic curves - sex with an antler handle!

Err - Nessmuk Corporal (edit)

Brent beat me to it - it looks like a Nessmuk.

The moral of the story: Jake, you need a belt sander. It's time. Accept your destiny.

Actually. I have a broken one. I wanted a center rivet scale, so I am having a friend drill and rivet it. This could take the rest of my life.
We move slowly here.

Aside from a concealed weapon. why would you wish to have a kukuri at the mall?
I wear a sidearm. I do not let people see it.

Sweetie!!!!:D I'm a new sarge owner, and I LIKEIT !!!! The smaller HI knives are GREAT. I've got a nice antler handled set of the smaller knives...Karda (Sher), JKM (Kumar), and 2 Sarges (Bura, totaly different handle shape and blade geometry). All awesome.:p ;) ;)

I dunno, Jake. Looks like your friend did a sloppy job fixing the blade/guard to the handle. I'd complain if I were you.

I've always wondered why the Nessmuk shape shown in his book was shaped the way it was. I can't see any particular advantage. Perhaps it had a more conventionally-shaped blade which had the tip broken off, and then was ground to the serpentine shape?

Sears went to quite a bit of trouble to have his belt axe made, but makes little mention of his belt knife, except to decry the large blades that others used.

dunno.

I'm very glad you like it.

Darn you all.

You've made the Sarge a legend.
How many knives am I supposed to buy, anyway?
Gotta get a Sarge.

All this work makes the Sarge knife your own. The difference between the knives shown in this thread and a store bought-behind-glass-counter are night and day.

The shape makes it very easy to hold the knife by the top of the blade to scrape leather and do fine work...
Some of the latest measurements of the drawings compared to the axe, shows that the blade may have been somewhat bigger than what the reproductions have been made as...This would make that even easier...

Maybeso James...

but, dunno. I mentioned to Jake that with a little more deliberate grinding, I could have made the Corporal look very much like a Nessmuk as shown in the book by Dover Publications.

I think the exaggerated thumb rest area, sloping up to the beginning of the false edge, then sharply dropping down to the clip point, all track to a Nessmuk shape.

No matter. Just a curiosity to me.

I'm just tickled that Jake likes it.
