First, I would like to introduce myself to the BladeForums community. My name is John and I've been reading the forums and stickies quite extensively over the past three months or so. I live in Summerville, SC. So far, all of you have helped me out with my first knife build very much already and I appreciate all of your knowledge and expertise.

Here's my question. I am currently building my first knife. I am using O1, 3/16" steel. The knife has an OAL of 9", blade length(cutting edge) 4.1", and handle length is 4.75". I have already cut out and shaped the knife, and started grinding the bevel. I haven't marked my hardware as of yet. I will be doing that this week and drill the holes. I plan on doing everything myself, to include heat treat with a one brick forge setup, temper, of course the finishing grinds, and handle material. So I am at the handle right now. I already know that I am going to use micarta that I will make out of an Air Force Airman Battle Uniform (our newer style of camo) and I think it will look pretty good. My question lies with the handle hardware. I am currently torn between torx flathead stainless hardware or possibly basic handle pins for this specific knife. I am looking for your recommendations for handle hardware and some suggestions on what you think would go well with this knife. Thanks everyone for the read.

Here's what I have so far.

John, Welcome to the world of knife making. I also live In Summerville let me know if you need help with any thing.
Thanks Gene

Thanks, Gene. I will let you know if I need help with anything. Do you know of any good places in town to get any local steel? I know there's a place off of Ashley Phosphate, but not sure if they have what I need.

Welcome aboard John, I too just started working on my knife although you are a bit ahead of me. What are you using for your tools (files, belt grinders)?

Thanks, Pete. I used a good old hack saw to cut my steel in half. I was pretty apprehensive in using my angle grinder for rough shaping, but I finally got it out and was glad that I did. After that I moved to a half-round file and flat bastard file to do some smoothing before moving onto the 1" x 30" belt sander. I will use a hand drill to drill my holes for the handle once I figure out what hardware that I'm going to use. Where are you at so far with your knife?
