Hello all, My name is Bob. I have been reading bladeforums for a couple months now and feel that it it time i make a proper introduction. I sort of fell into knife making. I am an avid shooter and frequent the ar15.com forums, where I found a tutorial on the stock removal knife, Here . This, coupled with some materials engineering/metallurgy courses I took at ISU, piqued my interest in knife making. As a result I did some google research, found this site, and found more information than i ever thought possible. With this combined motivation, I bought a harbor freight belt sander and a piece of O1 flatstock, some kydex and some micarta and here's what I wound up with.
This if the first one I made. Kinda-sorta hunter, with micarta handle. The odd, rust toned coloring around the handle is a function of the camera and is not really there. Not the greatest finish, not the greatest heat treatment, not the greatest edge...overall, I like the way it looks and the way it turned out, but there is room for (much) improvement.
My second attempt is more of the "ranger" (I guess) style with cord wrapped handle. The tanto point seemed easier to grind and i think overall, this is a better knife. I am more confident in it even if the finish looks a little less refined.
In the end, I can't wait to go back to my local machine supply and get more steel. I'm pretty sure I see an addiction brewing.
Anyway, enough rambling.
Thank you all for the vast information you all have provided and I look foreward to showing off better, more refined knives in the future.
Bob
