Hey guys, my name is Dave and although I have been lurking here for a while, I don't really post much. I've been slowly been getting into knife making for a few years now. Have done some kits and now am at the stock removal stage. With two kids and all that goes with it I don't get to devote as much time to the hobby as I'd like but I'm getting there. I really appreciate all the knowledge and tips I've learned here. Thanks.

Now onto my question....I am looking to upgrade my little 1x30 to a good 2x72 grinder. My budget is gonna be around 2k. After reading all the threads I could find here I think I've settled on the Pheer with the 10" wheel. Its seems to have the most bang for the buck in my price range. So, can anyone here talk me out of(or into) getting the Pheer? I've looked at the Northridge, Esteem, AMK, and all the others I've seen recommended here. I have no experience with any 2x72s so I'm a blank slate starting out. Thoughts?

Dave, I can't help with the grinder but lots of folks on here will be along to advise you.
Glad you decided to start posting as a beginner myself I can learn from your's and others questions.

I would steer clear of the AMK. The other 3 are good choices. The Esteem has a small wheel set up which I like more which gives you access to the entire wheel. It also uses 1.25" tool arms which may be a setback for aftermarket tooling since most use 1.5".
Never heard anything negative about the Northridge, they seem to be the new Gold standard. The pheer will probably get you the most accessories if the budget is tight and it is also a great choice.

I haven't tried anything but my esteem. I pays something close to what you have budgeted and have vfd, 2hp, 3 tooling arms, flat plate, 8" contact wheel, small wheel attachment, and a rest. I bought .5" and 1" small wheels from Pops for around $50 each. I'm very happy with my machine.

One factor I didn't think about when I bought it was that these guys make these machines by hand and don't always have them in stock. If you are wanting it for your time off at the holidays you might have to call around.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will take another look at the Esteem.

Another question...roughly how big is the footprint of grinders? I'm trying to plan out enough space in my tiny shed/wookshop.
