Hello,my name is Tom Santini. I've been making knives for about 5 yrs. now. My mentor was Robert Nelson Parker, a great teacher and freind. I do stock removal. My question is, 4 yrs. ago I bought a bunch of steel of a retired knife maker, and got a pc. of 316 ss that is 3/16 x 1.5 x 72" I know I can't make a knife out of it,so I was wondering what I could use it for ,besides using it for patterns. Thanks for the help. Tom:D

I use 3xx/4xx series stainless for the majority of my guards and bolsters. Both finish up nicely, but a lot of makers seem to be favoring 400 series lately. At any rate, it's good material to use for knife furniture, and I see no reason not to use it.

guards, spacers, pommels and bolsters are some things that I can think of. Mind you the bolsters would be thin unless they're going on a folder.

:thumbup:Thanks guys for the info. I usually use 416 for my gaurds. I guess I'll have to cut a pc. of the 316 to see how it sands and buffs out. Thanks again. Tom
