Hi everyone, I've been lurking for a while, and now have a question, so had better introduce myself. My name's Brian, and I live in the UK. Not the best place for collecting knives I know, but the beer's good, and I don't want to start off with some sort of political rant! For obvious reasons I don't tend to buy or carry any knives over 3". I don't worry about the letter of the law, all my knives except one are locking, so technically illegal here. I'm middle aged and live in the sticks, so I'd have to go some to be stopped and searched, and carrying something with a 4 or 5 inch blade would be unnecessary for my needs, string cutting, office tasks, food cutting etc. I've been very pleased with the few standard spyderco, kershaw and benchmade knives I've bought, but have a question about weight. It's just a personal thing I suppose, but I'm not entirely keen on the concept of knives being lightweight - I know there's a place for everything, but I'd rather have a folder which, although small, would tear the bottom out of my pocket, or pull my waistband down to my knees! That way I know it's there, and I haven't lost it. Also there's something very satisfying about feeling a heavy knife in the hand. My preference would be for something with a plain blade in good quality steel, with synthetic scales, that looks and feels like a knife. Any ideas?
Thanks
Brian

The pen knife was made for you. If you don't mind being an outlaw get a Manix. It certainly has the weight you are looking for. Both the mini Manix and the Full size have blades over 3" however. I personally don't like such a heavy knife for outside my property, but carry the Manix around my land. It works great for cutting weeds, small branches and anyhting else that needs to be cut. The Manix is about as ergonomic a knife as you will find. Once you get one in your hand you will know that it is ready to work and work hard.

Brian,

I'm also in the UK and waaaaaay out in the sticks.

When walking, if I want a substantial knife, I swap between the following:

Al Mar SERE 2000

Large Sebenza

Manix

Benchmade 710D2

Strider SMF

Any of these will do the job

The Spyderco Mini-Manix is a pretty hefty folder (5.5 0z) with a 3.13" blade and G-10 handles. (don't let the word mini fool you - mini it's not)

One of heaviest knife I have ever hold is Byrd Cara Cara (<$20). They made also G10 version. But steel isn't anything extra
It is very similiar to Spyderco Police ($90). Steel is VG10. All SS construction.
Other candidates:
Benchmade Skirmish.
Sog Spec-Elite. (or SOG Tomcat 3)
MOD Tempest
Microtech Vector?

You can come to Czech Rep., beer is one of best in world here and no knife laws :)

But avg. year income (before taxation!) is about $9000 a year (but hey, liter of petrol costs only $1.44 and new Honda Civic 1.8 Sport costs here about $25000) and we still have communist party in government

and our politicans are worse than equatorial african dictators.

Fallkniven TK3 is quite heavy for its size, Laminated blade, non threatening and quite handsome.

Mini Manix all the way, it’s got a lock you can bet your life on (not suggesting you do) and will probably be one of the heaviest small folders you can find. The blade steel is also top notch.

I own a Manix and it is top notch. That said for your requirments the Mini Manix would be perfect.

Agreed. The SERE 2K has a good feel to it (weight wise) and you won't be disappointed w/ VG-10 steel. The blade is over 3" however. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the advice folks. I really like the look of the mini manix, and also the Al Mar, and the I'd definitely get the weight with either. Not the thing to remove sticky tape at work, but great when you're out in the woods. It's funny, I used to prefer more traditional knives, wood and brass etc. but my tastes have changed, and I now go for the more "functional" look. Both of those knives look really functional!
Thanks again
Brian

You might also want to check out the Ontario Hossom Retribution-2 and possible the smaller 3 (when it is released). Super tough folding knife and big, big, big!

For big and heavy, what about a stainless steel handled Endura....
OR for something a little smaller, with some heft, and STYLE, the Volpe!
