First off. My name is Spencer. Im 13 years old. Soon to be 14. Ive been making things since I was younger. I just recently started making knives at the beginning of this year. Ive made 3 knives. This is my fourth. A small chopper/cleaver. Im making it for my best friends father. Its 5160 steel. Blade length is 5.5 inches and 1 3/4 inch wide, and handle length is 5 and 1/8 inches and 1/4 thick. And the handle will be Red Oak.

Now before HT all I have to do is clean it up. Also Ive heat treated 1080 before. But never 5160. In the kiln I have access to only reaches 1470 degrees fahrenheit. Would it be possible for me to get a good heat treat on this 5160 steel at a temperature of 1470 or below? If so what temperature?
Thanks

.Welcome to Blade Forums:thumbup::thumbup: 1475 is where it becomes non magnetic so you need to get it a little hotter because you lose some heat going from the kiln to the oil.1500-1550 is what most use.Why does your kiln only go to 1470?

Thanks. It was my Grandfathers glass kiln. He read it wrong. I went to his house and it goes to 1800. I will be doing the heat treat tomorrow. Ill let you all know how it goes.

Nice job, welcome to the forums. Good to have some young'uns getting into knifemaking; I'm in high school myself. Are those pics full size? It would be nice to get a closer look at your work.
