The introduction to knife making get together in Waco TX will be this weekend 10/12/2013.

This is a very informal event designed for new to intermediate knife makers that may not had the opertunity to use 2 x 72" knife grinder.

This will be a hands on event and you should leave with a mostly completed knife.

I'm no expert but I can help you get started.

If you are a more experienced knife maker and are able to come please do you experience would be appreciated

The only cost will be for materials.

Please call or email me for location

If you are interested, but can't make it email me I may do it again

I'm trying to get started making knives, but I'm working all weekend, otherwise I'd be there! Hope you do it again sometime...

I forwarded this info on to our Abilene area knife club. Maybe some of those guys are free this weekend.

Awesome! Do we need to bring anything? How much will materials cost in general? (estimate so we can know how much to bring) Also, what time window is this occurring in? Very excited, Jim! Thanks for doing this!

Materials will run about $30.00 bucks, that will include a piece of 5160 steel. Grinding belts, wood handle material (if anyone has any mesquite I have been wanting to try it) 8" is as long as I can get in my heat treating kiln. So have some sketches of what you would like to make start off with a 1 1/4" X 8" rectangular and stay inside the box. Due to time restraints keep it simple I suggest a drop point hunter with no guard.

We will start at 8:30 call for address and directions.

If you live near by you might want to come by Friday evening.

Thanks Jason,
I am by no means an expert but I am lucky enough to have most of the equipment most of which I build myself. I just wanted to help get some folks an introduction to knife making. I know I would have jumped at the chance 15 years ago. And I don't think it would help someone that is completely new to go take a class from a Master Smith and spend a ton of money doing it. After they have the basics down sure that would be great but most of them charge about $500. per day. There are some group classes that I would like to go to but they are still a bunch of money.

Could always use some help if you could make it down.

Jim

Just to let everyone know it went off without a hitch I think we all had a great time. I know I did. And thanks to Jason Fry we had one attendee all the way from the Abilene area. I am looking forward to doing it again sometime. Or someone else hosting it somewhere in Texas
