Introduction

Welcome to the porch.
Grab a chair and start whittling. A glass, something to pour into the glass, and some knife (and non-knife) talk is always at hand :)

Here's to new friends! Cheers!

Welcome, and glad to have another enthusiast here to share stories and experiences with.

Welcome to the Porch John. Looking forward to seeing more of your Traditionals as you decide what your likes and dislikes are. IMHO that Smooth Ivory Bone Northfield is a great pickup. :)

Hey there John

Welcome, nice post, the fact you love dogs makes you an instant friend-often you can judge the character of the man by the way he treats animals.

I look forward to seeing some more post and photos of your knives!

I changed my avatar to one of our dogs. She's an Ausie Shepherd. Our other dog is a border collie. We had to put one down over the summer - she was 15.

John very happy to have you on the porch. I also like others have enjoyed your post. Hope to see you around for many moons.

John, I've already had the pleasure of conversing with you a bit in Carl's Lounge, but I'd like to formally welcome you here at well. It's good to have you here!

And, just so you know you're already having an impact here, you inspired me to pick up a Kaweco Sport Classic which arrived last week. ;) I'm liking it so far: very smooth and a tad finer line than I was expecting, but pleasantly so.

Glad you like the pen. I really enjoy mine. There is a store here that sells pens and pencils and going there, for me, is almost as dangerous as looking in the knife exchange or online stores. It's a good thing there aren't any knife shops here. :)

As usual, I'm a little behind the curve, but welcome to The Porch, John!
Kind of interesting that you've been a Blade Forums member for more than 10 years, but are just now starting to experience the wonders of traditionals and those who love them. ;)
(What the heck is offensive cyber security??? Do you identify potential threat actors and eliminate them with extreme prejudice?:D)

Welcome to The Porch John, it is a great place to spend some time, make some friends and talk about Traditional knives. Fair warning these Traditional knives get in your blood and can be very damaging to the checkbook:D

Copy that, Augie. I have three now and four on the way. I just bought another last night! :/ I just never really gave these little gems a hard look before. One thing for sure, they are a lot easier on the checkbook than my modern knives. Perhaps it's time to sell a few of those.

Actually I teach the methods that black hat hackers use. Once students know what they are up against, then I teach how to defend an organization from such threats.

As for me being on the forums for a long time, this is true. Let's just say I've had a busy and complicated life and am finally taking the time to enjoy my hobbies.

Thanks for enlightening me, John, on the meaning of "offensive cyber security"; that makes a lot of sense!
I hope you can find as much enjoyment here on The Porch as I have!

Since you have a wide variety of knives, I assume you have pretty good sharpening skills and equipment. If not, Queen's D2 can be something of a rite of passage for your sharpening skills.

I'm experiencing this for myself right now.
I got a Queen canoe some many months ago... it was razor sharp out of the box, loved the knife.
Then, I went through a weird period of not being able keep the blade sharp.
Had to put the knife away for a time.
Then, on a whim I pulled it out one day, sharpened it, and it was razor sharp again.
This continued for a time, then the blade got dull, then worse with each attempt at sharpening.
I have tried numerous times, hours at re-profiling with course to medium et.. both free-hand as well as a fixed edge on a Smith's sharpener.
I'll get it to a sharp edge, cut paper TWICE, and then it's dull as a butter knife again.
Stropping doesn't help.
I've read endless thread and details of the NOTORIOUS D2 Queen steel.
All my other knives I sharpen easily, great edge, but never can I get back this original edge... shame, because I can never use this
knife, I can't ever cut anything with it.
I know this isn't the right thread, but I got a button pushed when I saw Queen D2 mentioned!

Welcome, John! I've only been here about 10 months now, but the wealth of information and level of respect around here has already made a big impact upon me. I hope that your time here mirrors the experience that I've had thus far. Be sure to post lots of pictures! We like those!

Welcome to the porch John! We did a bit of business a while back and I can vouch for what a welcome addition this bloke is~
Hope you enjoy and learn much from the wealth of knowledge that is the traditional forum :)
