Hello
I'd like to introduce myself.
My Name is Patrick Logue.
I have been bitten by the knife making bug. I am a complete beginner.
Its something i've wanted to do since my dad got me that first Buck folder and I gutted & skinned my first deer with it.
I'm 37 now and decided over Christmas that there's no time like the present to learn.
Ive read a few books and have a million questions, so I hope yopu guys dont mind pesky beginners.
After deciding i immediately found a guy with a whole set up for sale and bought it all for $300. I've since forged 2 blades and i'm totally addicted.
I guess the most pressing of my million questions, is: can somebody tell me a good source for steel anywhere near Western Pa
Thanks
Pat

Welcome to the forums, and the addiction. ;) I don't know about locally, but there are some great places to purchase it online, depending on what you're looking for. What steel do you prefer?

or going to try stock removal??? Either way, I think I'd start with just good'ol car leaf spring. It's free by the way... :)

regards, mitch

my steel preference is dictated by my experience. my 1st blade I hammered out of an old allen wrench. The second, i got a nice bar of o-1 from a machinist friend of mine.
I've been reading that 1095 is pretty universally liked. I want to try it all but will settle for anything right now

Welcome Pat, another PA bladesmith, cool! Fire away and if you come east at all, stop by & say hi.

Welcome aboard, just starting out if you can get old coil springs they make good knives and have enough steel for several per spring so you can come up with a heat treat for that spring. Or if you can get ahold of old John Deer load control shafts there high grade 5160 and make great knives.

Admiral Steel,Crucible services, and all of the knife supply catalogues.
Knife shows are a great learning and buying experience.Come to the show in Harrisonsburg,Va. on April 1,2,3 and I'll show you around and introduce you to some suppliers.I will have three tables at the show.
Welcome to knife making - Stacy Apelt

Welcome to the best knife forum in the world, Pat! You will find the best forgers (steel, not paper) here, too.

Greetings. :) You'll love it here. So much knowledge from a great group of knifemakers. Look forward to seeing your work.
Scott
