Greetings folks. I just wanted to say hello. I joined for an odd reason...

I'm fighting cancer, and chemotherapy really kicks the crap out of the body and the old gray matter. My recovery will include a fitness program of course, but I needed to pick a mental fitness challenge too.

I chose knife building. It can start simply and it can ramp up to very challenging as I recover. It is not as physically taxing as some hobbies, but has enough activity to keep me moving around the shop.

I'm looking forward to learning from you all. Thanks for having me here.

Welcome to Shop Talk and congrats on fighting your disease with all your might. That goes a long way in recovery and chemo response.

Knifemaking has its own risks, and you want to watch out for bleeding issues and absolutely wear a respirator when making dust.

There are simple ways to do it with hand tools and hand power. that would be the best start for you. Look at the stickys and find the one, "How to Instructions for Making a Knife". That will pretty much tell you the whole process. HT can be arranged through any of several professional sources ( even in Canada) or perhaps one of the Northern chaps here will offer to help by doing it for you.

Start with a drawing and your plans. Post them here and let the folks help with any refinements. Offers for help to those who really want to learn are frequent.

Welcome and keep up the positive attitude! There's lots of info around here and even more positive support.

Welcome Sir! Many of us here, have survived this battle, you can as well. When experiencing a low, focusing your mind on a challenging knife project can get you through it.

There is a no dearth as to information or encouragement on this site, take full advantage of it and take time to read the stickies at the top of the main page they are a treasure trove of knife making skills, products and materials.

Keep us posted on your progress, Fred

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Much appreciated. As advised, I'll post some plans before I get too far along. My first knife will be a simple one, probably a small chef's knife. An early success will be better than a failure. :-)

Welcome and Keep the Spirits high while fighting the good fight...

I have a friend that works with me at my regular job who is also fighting cancer and he comes by my shop on weekends to help me with layout and drilling and other odd jobs that keep him busy and his mind off all those other discomforts of therapy....I enjoy the company and really appreciate all he is doing to keep mentally and physically fit while helping...Good Luck....
