Invention from the Fall 2012 Beckerhead Gathering

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. I was on the way home from the gathering when I stopped to let the dog out. I couldn't find her leash and then I realized that I had packed it in the cases strapped to the top of my hooptie. I didn't want to undo the straps and dig through the case in the rain so I looked around the car for something to use. I found a 5 foot piece of bank line tied to the corner of my tarp in the trunk. I was skeptical but I used it and found that I actually liked it better than her regular leash. When I got home I went to work.

I bought the mechanism to attach it to the collar from the hardware store for a dollar.

I attached it to a 5 foot piece of bank line using a bowline knot. For the handle, I noticed that the bank line can dig into your wrist a little bit if Nelly gets after a rabbit or something. So I took about a 10 inch piece of orange paracord, took the guts out of it and slid it over the standing end of the bank line. I then tied the standing end of the bank line into a lanyard knot, thus securing the handle and making things nice and neat.

The whole mess folds up real small and ways 1.25 ounces.

I bet I could get it even lighter if I used a fancier/lighter weight method to attach it to her collar. Maybe a tiny titanium carabiner or something.

The comfort handle not only makes handling your vicious mutt easier, but if you drop it into the leaves or something, it is easy to find.

Our testing reveals the leash to be highly functional and stylish. All the other dogs in the neighborhood want one.

hehe cool idea there!! i have a boston as well phelan kell hes 12 years old and rowdy as the day we got him love that dog!!

Stylish. A very posh way to leash your pooch.

You've heard of skinny jeans right? This is the skinny leash. It makes your dog very posh and trendy. Also it makes your dog look tough, because the dog's leash is made out of outdoorsy/tactical stuff.

Very cool!

Not sure if it would work for our two dogs, but I like the look of it!

#36 bank line has a reported breaking strength of 360 pounds. I probably wouldn't be strong enough to hold it for very long near the breaking strength. I would probably let go before the dog was able to pull hard enough to break the leash.

Yeah but your mongrels are MONSTERS!

I know I couldn't hold it that far. I might not use it if I was tying a big dog to say a tree, but for your dog it's fine.

Ultralight tacticool dog leashes, just what the world needed. :D

Now she just needs some MOLLE webbing on that sweater.

LOL!:D

Good points! I think the real issue for us is that the thin cord would be hard to hold onto (cutting into the hand) if we had to manhandle the dogs. We've actually stopped using some leashes for this reason. But like I said, that's just us. I really like the design!

We thought that as well and one day Oz decided he had to meet this female dog across the park. He was lying down tied to a tree with some slack. As soon as he saw her, he got up and started running. There was sufficient slack that he was able do generate enough of dynamic load to break the hardware. We heard a pop and saw him running. Luckily nothing happened as all he wanted to do was introduce himself to that lovely female dog. After many apologies to the other dog's owner we got him to come back to where we were - dog love!

Anyway, like I said, i really like the style of that leash - nice work!

So now we know, gmoneyluv's dog needs a climbing grade collar rated to 5,000 lbs of shock force, and a 15,000 lbs test cable for a leash. :D

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. Very crafty, Doc.

Better be careful with that monster. Looks like she will be pulling you around the neighborhood before too long.:D

I thought there was going to be a picture of a dog in this thread. :D

Holy crap! That is a serious dog!

We were gonna bring 'em down to the gathering but the young guy tore apart his pad the day before we were to leave. Required stiches. Ugh.

They are good boys but, they are boys...nuff said.

How old is your girl?

Scout (in the avatar) read this thread and laughed (well, it's kind of a chuckle).

It came out kind of growly, but I swear the word he used was "garrote".

Even with the hollowed out 550, the word I would use would be "amputee...".

Canines come in many sizes. This size leash is very limited...

Replace the gutted 550 with some tubular webbing, the stuff is very soft, at least by comparison.

Hey averageiowaguy, Love all your vids, keep them coming. I especially like your cooking episodes.
