I am new to this form so maybe this has been hashed over before but I am computer dumb:confused: and could not find anything. What system do you use to tag your knives in order to keep good records on what you have?

Thanks for your imput.

Tried an Excel spreadsheet for a bit. Didn't maintain it.
Now, I try to remember to put the receipt in the box. Stack the boxes on a shelf with the model sticker exposed.
In other words...I don't track formally.

To maintain a record of what I have and what they cost me. I use an Excel spreadsheet and try to keep it current.

As for the physical knives themselves what Goose said. Except in the case of old 110's & 112's. They all tend to look alike in their old style boxes. In that case I use small stick-on hand written labels in order to distinguish one from the other at a glance.

Welcome Rocky.

I thought about just keeping track in a notebook, but I'm afraid my wife will find out about all the knives that I just bought!

Yeah Messersmith. I keep my Excel spreadsheet password protected just in case.

Tag,Excel spreadsheet:eek:  .
I don't have a clue but I can tell if
any of my knives are out of place
or missing.:D
I will get organized one of these days:rolleyes: :D

The reason I started a spreadsheet and now "try" to keep the purchase data with each knife (screen print of an invoice) was to prevent my kids from selling the goods at a garage sale (po man's "estate sale") for "$10 Each" when I croak.

What I have also done is advise wifey to contact one of my forum-cronies for help in case I croak and she wants to get rid of the goods. Hopefully I will croak before she finds out what I've paid for some of 'em or I will wish I did.

That is why I always put the recipt in the box or with the knife.

long before computers were in the house.

Did you ever get any Circus peanuts?:D

That's a good idea Goose. I was thinking the same thing. And at the same time it would give some of the guys who appreciate them as much as we do, a chance to make some offers.

It would be nice to know they went to good homes.

If you have a problem posting pictures, there is a Quick & Dirty tutorial at Photobucket For Dummies. If you don't have a digital camera, but do have a scanner, lay your knife on the glass and throw a light colored towel/t-shirt/cloth over it and scan it. Save the pic, and follow the above instructions for posting pics.

If you are getting a blank screen (no hits) when using the Search function, follow these instructions courtesy of Cougar Allen [paraphrased] -

Click on "Search This Forum" (in the Forum you want searched); then click "Advanced Search"; select "Search Titles Only"; and put your subject in the keyword field. If you search all of Bladeforums for every occurrence of the subject that will overload the search function and you'll get no results, but if you follow these directions you'll find what you want.

I do the same thing. It's the only way I can figure out which box goes with which knife. I like to display the knives but don't want to lose track of the box it came in. :o

Of course I use a highly sofisticated system as you might expect from a guy in the knife business...I wrap 'em in foam and stick them in a big box.
I dont have to worry about mixing knife boxes because the older knives that I collect don't seem to show up with boxes.

Sometimes the use of adhesive stickers is not a good idea because I have seen it discolor the handle or leave a spot on the blade. Or, the goo gets stuck on the knife. Tags that can be tied to the knife seem to work. Stickers actually on the paper knife box will ruin the box.

I don't keep track of anything. If I can see them I know I still have them.

I hear that. Making Excel spreadsheets/dedicated display cases/itemized inventory lists is a bit too anal for me...I want to collect interesting knives, not boring paperwork about knives...

...Another $.02 for DarrylS... :D

...I might be up to about $1.61 now...That 532 is gettin' closer and closer...LMAO...

...I agree with ya Trax. I don't think I've ever bought a knife because it had a box and paperwork on purpose. I tend to buy what I like and what I won't be afraid to use. Maybe that is the cause of my dislike for "etchings" and signatures" and the like on anything I'm interested in. As for knowing what I have...I have all I own in a couple of colonoscope cases. They are each about the size of a large suitcase and are "hardened" to protect the $30,000 dollar scopes. They do a fine job of protecting the knives and they do have sturdy locks. About once a month I open each one and buff the knives with a soft cotton cloth and remind myself what's in there...LOL...I ain't got time for that Excel stuff... <---------computer stupid...:p

Small folders take up less space but can get lost easier also. I keep mine in flat tackle box trays, the biggest Plano makes. I will put two knives in one tray if they are the same. I line the individual slot with a slip of paper that has whatever info. I want to write. I then put a sticker on the OUTSIDE of the box above the slot the particular model is in. Like Joe said stickers will ruin boxes and leave stuff on knives. Also don't use any rubber type shelf liner as it bleeds something into the scales. I would like to have the time to fix a three ring binder with a sheet for each knife and some photos of it along with the age, cost etc. You can buy such programs that you can store on you PC and print. They are offered as 'collectors' record keeping programs. Coin, door knob, china collectors types apparently use them. It's one of those I'll do that when I retire things. maybe :p

Darryl,
I'm just picturing someone that knows nothing of your love of knives opening up one of your colonoscope cases and getting an altogether unique perspective of how you handle your colon exams. I think it would set the effort to reduce the occurrence of colon cancer back by about 100 years. It also takes the concept of the cure is worse than the ailment to a new level. :o

(I'm going to look closely the next time I go in for a colonoscopy)

...LMBO...Mike I never even gave that a thought when I started using those cases for the knives...The picture you describe of the unknowing person seeing what I had in them brings to mind thoughts of Vincent Price or Edgar Allen Poe walking down a dark street at night with their collars pulled up over their faces...EEEEEEEKKKKK...
