iPad: The World in the Palm of Your Hand

Yeah, it's basically a super sized itouch. But, this is just the 1st version. Apple will add features based on consumer feedback.

I actually welcome this product. Even though it's unlikely to be a huge success, it has a good chance to revive and reshape the almost-extinct UMPC. UMPC has a touch screen just like the iPad, but it's superior because it's a full blown computer. Microsoft and Google will come up with competing products, if only to compete with Apple.

You can get all of that today from a $300 netbook. :p

But wait! There's more. For $300 you also get 10X more storage memory, a larger screen, standard USB ports, longer battery life, a physical keyboard, faster processor, a video-out plug...

And, believe it or not, for only $300 it includes a zippered case!

Hey, I'm talking about sexy design that I might actually consider buying.

Besides, selling netbooks isn't going to make the stock go higher (profit margins razor thin). I've got more $ to invest, as I bought in around $80 the first time... this is called investments, boys. I watched those iPHONE lines, and I was excited... not for the phone, but my statements.

Blast, I somehow thought this thread was at w&c.. My sincere apologies!

Meh. Does it have copy and paste? :p

I'm not really into Apple products, especially when a significantly cheaper and more capable netbook/laptop would more effectively meet my needs.

What I'm hoping, though, is that it will really shake up the UMPC and tablet pc market.

I think I'd be more interested in an Android version.

not really keen on this one ............. maybe the 2nd - 5 th generatrion will make me buy one

The ipad a kindle killer? Not likely. I love my kindle! The kindle is a dedicated reader and that's all I really need. I get the Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post automatically and wirelessly downloaded to my kindle at 0100 each morning. No more getting out of bed to get my morning paper and just the thing for reading in the bathroom. The kindle easily fits in my briefcase and i love being able to read a book in bed without the hassle of trying to balance a big book or folding a big dirty paper. Don't get me wrong the ipad has it's place and may even do well. It's just that the ipad sounds just a little too much like what my wife tucks in her panties every morning just in case and that just kinda grosses me out!:D:thumbup::p;)

I thought this was pretty funny...

I love the idea, I think Apples multi touch glass touch pads are an industry leader, unfortunately they seem to be stalling with features most people truly enjoy. To be able to fully grasp the web it must be flash supporting as well as other common medias especially that new fangled HTML5 coding.

IMO that's a serious failure for the launch and for the veracity of it's projected sales charts.

The idea is great the design is nice, it could be slightly smaller or in different size versions to accommodate day planner replacement.

Imagine a 6" tablet the thickness of a day planner, would make networking and keeping track of appointments very streamline and connectible more than ever before.

Oh and the name sucks.

A lot of good points here. I see two markets being covered really well by this device: photographers and people in rural areas who don't/can't get high speed internet. The photography thing is self-explanatory; there's no better way to show off a lot of photos than with this thing. In rural areas you can get cell service, but no high-speed internet. Most people would have to buy a $60/mo 2-yr contract to do some web browsing and get email, but this will allow them to do it for half the price and with no contract. Coming from the sticks myself, I'd be all over this thing.

BTW, posting from Apple iPhone. :p :D

I doubt there is any photography software available for it. If it ran OSX or XP for the operating system, it at least could use the simple apps that come with peoples' cameras. But even then you could forget about it running any big-name stuff like Capture NX (for Nikon cameras), Photoshop, Darkroom, and probably not even GIMP... It's simply too weak of a machine.

Without that stuff, all you'd have is a $100 digital picture frame that costs $500. :barf:

You might have a point with that. For me though, it would need some way to send video to a larger monitor. The 10" Asus monitor is just OK when I'm desperate and stuck in a motel somewhere. No way I'd use it for extended browsing. At least the Asus has a video-out plug so I can plug it into a real monitor if I have to use it at home.

Well, a $500 picture frame is totally worth it for slick, high-res presentations of your work. Editing is not something I'd even consider unless you could run all the nice software. I don't do photography for a living, but I've still had multiple occasions where something like the iPad would have been invaluable. I admit, it's a niche market, but one that could use servicing. That market certainly won't be enough to sell eleventy billion iPads for Apple, though... :D

As for video-out, there's an adapter that allows you to output video to a monitor or projector. Apple's example was showing off Keynote presentations via a projector. I don't think most of the rednecks care too much about video-out, though (I can say that 'cause I are one :p). I'm afraid I'd use it more lounging around in my underwear than sending it to a monitor. :barf: :D

The one thing it REALLY needs is a camera so I could share my browsing experience with all you folks. :D

I'll stick with my Asus netbook that costs much less and offers better specs, more applications, a larger screen, and standard ports and plugs.

You can't even connect the iPad to USB devices without buying an additional cable adapter. Want a protective case, gotta buy it extra. Connect a camera, gotta buy an extra adapter... See the trend? Ridiculous.

+1

Picture frames of that resolution generally run in the $150-$200 range. Just sayin'... :)

You forgot about the "pimpalicious factor", though. :p :D

Surely that's worth a measly 300 bucks. Have you checked the price of bling lately?

Honestly, you can't say you'd sell yourself as a cutting edge, talented photographer in touch with the modern client...and show up with a $150 digital picture frame. Not gonna happen. If that were your business, you'd spend the money. It's not your business though, so you can't justify it, and that's cool. Me? I've got the money, I like a modern and sophisticated client, and I'll probably be picking up an iPad.

Hey, a fool and his money, right? :D
