I have been looking at Ipods and just saw the Zune last night and was very impressed with it. Its $50 less with the 30GB drive and with a larger screen than the Classic.

Anyone have either that can give me some information to make a decision? My interest is videos, movies mostly, and also songs and maybe even books on "tape". I have an MP3 player so I am not a novice to that part of it but the video players are new to me.

Thanks,
KR

The reports are the Zune is poor. There are updated models soon to be released though.

Thanks!
Great reviews and information. I'm sorting through it right now.

Thanks again,

IMHO, hard to beat an iPod.

Get a refurbished one...you save about 50% and the warranty is the same. For all intents and purposes it's new. You'd never know it was refurbished.

The UI on the ipod is perfect, and iTunes is a great software to go with it.

From what I hear, the Zune sucks in comparison.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but I hate Apple about as much, maybe more. IMHO Apple is just as bad as MS but with a way bigger bunch of fans and better commercials.
As Saooer76 said, try Creative, they have excellent products for better prices than Apple's, look better than Microsoft's.
I currently have a Cowon player, I vouch for this brand too, they have everything I need in a DAP (sound quality, big capacity, good autonomy, UMS transfers, robust case, .flac files support...), but maybe you will find them ugly and will prefer another brand. The most important thing for me in a DAP is (after sound quality and capacity, well, the third most important) the ability to run it without software to install (use it at friends', at work, wherever, and runs with Linux too, though not that many people are concerned by that last point), I don't want to have to rely on iTunes or Windows Media Player.

If you don't care about proprietary software, you may prefer Sony, they have almost perfect players which are totally spoiled by the need of SonicStage (though I heard they were about to change their habits about that).

I've been pretty happy with my Ipod 30GB video. I've never been a Mac fan due to the ability to tweak/hack MS products with LOTS of available CHEAP software. That said, the Ipod is a great design that just works. Lots of support aftermarket products due to them being such a market leader.

'Course, I bought one used from a buddy and didn't pay full retail or I probably couldn't have justified the costs to myself. Any MP3 player is nice for airline travel or public commuting. I won't plug my ears with headphones while riding my motorcycle around town but the wind blast is so extreme on the interstate that my hearing is shot then anyway.

Good luck and have fun!

DO NOT BUY A REFURBISHED IPOD!!!

I had 2 refurbs, and they both died quickly and then APPLE SAID "TOO BAD, YOU SHOULD BUY A NANO"!!!

Do yourself a favor and get a toshiba gigabeat or a classic, NEW.

Unless you have some proof to back that claim up I call BS. I have had some problems with iPods but nothing that warranted an Apple employee telling me "TOO BAD, YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT A NANO!". That's just bad business and not good for Apple.

How exactly would you like proof of what a 20ish year old burnout told me at the iStore. Honestly, I still personally use a iPod, but I bought it new.

Man, you could say that about any product when it is represented by a "20ish year old burnout." ;) Heck, they have difficulty making change from a dollar.

iPod isn't a bad music player, but dang it if it isn't WAY overpriced for what you get, and despite a decent interface, there are still a lot of annoyances to go along with.

I'll echo the recommendations for Creative.

Buy your digital music from emusic, amazon.com, etc.

And if you want to double or triple the value of your music player, get some really nice headphones to go with it.

totally true, if you were to listen to your music with the included headphones, it doesn't matter what player you buy, the sound will be quite bad.
Try Sennheiser earphones, most of their products have a very good quality/price ratio.
You don't have to buy $1000 earphones to appreciate your music but the headphones delivered with a DAP often make it hard (well, some brands deliver quite good headphones with their players, though neither Apple nor Microsoft do it)

Think about a personal media player that does not require convoluted software ( itunes ) to "manage" your music.

That choice is up to you of course but every ipod owner that I know grudgingly uses itunes , while my Chi-pod clone works just fine thru Windows explorer :D:thumbup:
No silly , convoluted , master-servant software to bow down to every time you want to transfer music , no silly DRM nonsense , etc etc.

I am very satisfied with my Archos AV-500.
A bit bulky but the screen is very good and the 100 gig harddrive is very useful.

You should check the Archos website.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I have looked at the Creative labs Zen Vision W and am very seriously thinking about getting that at this point. Thanks Sapper76, choubbi and Dunhausen for pointing that out and everyone else with their advice.

I'm still listening though. I will post with whatever I buy.

Thanks for all the help.
