My kids gave me an Ipod for Fathers Day. I was wondering what accessories you gadget gurus have and enjoy. I was thinking of getting an FM Transponder for the car and an arm band. Also are skins necessary? Thanks

I don't have an iPod but if I did (I wouldn't buy one...Apple...yuck!) I would get the iTrip adapter that lets you play your tunes over your car stereo.

I have an iTrip and can't stand it. It works OK, but constantly fades out. If you live in an area with a lot of FM stations you may have trouble finding enough good freqs to keep it going. If you live out in the country it may be better. It does work better in one of our cars (Saturn) than the other.

My favorite iPod accessory is the in-ear earbud set from Sony. Can be found for under $35 and sound much better than the stock buds. Many would claim that Shure, etymotic, etc are better but are too much money for me to spend on something that will likely get destroyed at some point.

I put an iPod2Car in my car and it is OK. Better than the iTrip, but quite a bit more expensive.

If you go jogging at all then an armband is a must. Mine is permanently attached to my mini iPod.

My next accessory will be some better earphones. They keep falling out of my ears when I'm running.

I've got an iTrip and some Shure E2c headphones. I've got some "skin" type cases, but I don't use them.

And I thought I was the only one with that problem! In fact, I can't keep most ear buds in place even when I'm _not_ running. However, the Philips brand earbuds sold at Target Stores for less than 20 bucks actually stay in place and the sound is pretty decent.

I have an iTrip FM transmitter, it works fine for me, but I did spend a lot of time wandering around the spectrum to find an FM frequency that was not already allocated and cause interference. (88.15Mhz in my neck of the woods)

The other goody is a Belkin extra battery pack. Extends the life of the iPod to something like 16 hours without a charge.

I fly a lot, and the iPod hooked up to a set of noise cancelling headphones on board is pure bliss.
An added bonus is that when you are plugged into the iPod, you don't have to listen to the salesman in the next seat moaning about how he "almost" made the deal of the century. :)

Next goody will be an aluminium hard case.

I've actually been meaning to look at one of those that wrap around your neck and then into the ear. That style seems like it would be pretty secure but I'm not that knowledgable on earphones and to be honest I've never had much luck with them so I'm hesitant just to go out and buy yet another pair.

Anyone have any experience or leads on some good earphones for running?

i have played around with an itrip and they are great just you need to have them close, and you are going to be using yours in a car so you dont need to worry. i would get a chargetr/dock for you car, and the skins attract lots of dust and debris. i have a pair of shure e2c's and i will never buy another earphone(brand). they are absoluatly fantastic, if you have the cash i would go with the top of the line, i can only imagine what that sounds like. you will here your music from a whole new prespective. as for other cases i have a a simple leather case for mine with a belt clip that does not make it protrude from my belt alot, dont you just hate that. i would get some armor if you are one of those abusive people towards things like this. oh yea and if you takes lots of photos you can get a media reader to store them when you are away from a computer, planing on getting one soon.

Better earbuds are a defenite must buy. The ones that come with it suck in just about every way possible, they aren't comfortable (to me at least), they don't sound so good, and they advertise that you are listening to an iPod to potential thieves (a growing problem here in NYC anyway).

I just got myself the iTrip and so far it seems to be working pretty well. I bet if I play around a bit more to find a proper station it will be even better. My biggest motivation was that my new (well used really, but still new to me) car's CD player doesn't work. Rather than replace it at a cost of a few hundred dollars I went for the iTrip. I have ditched CD's pretty much since getting my iPod anyway so didn't think it made much sense to be using them in my car needing to carry a stack of CD's around.

I don't really see much point in getting the skins. They are pretty much just a cosmetic thing, and I would rather not waste my money on something that serves no real useful purpose. Besides which my iPod is usually in my pocket when I am using it.

I'm not seeing much love out there for the various iPod skins, but I really like mine. I have a Contour Showcase for my photo iPod and would recommend it for the following reasons:

1) It's a perfect fit to the shape of my iPod, and, as such, adds very little to the overall dimensions.

2) It locks up very securely

3) It gives you immediate access to all controls and functions without undoing or opening anything.

4) Most of it is white (black is also available I believe), but the face is translucent, ergo the screen is protected during use. In my experience the screens on these things scratch extremely easily (like when wiping off with a t-shirt), so this is a big plus for me.

5) Another big plus for me is the fact that the white portion is covered in a very grippy rubbery substance. I'm not sure about you, but it was immediately evident to me that the polished metal underside of an iPod has a coefficient of friction approaching zero. Mine would slide around on damn near anything. If I didn't know better, I would have sworn that Clark Griswold coated mine with the same substance he put on his saucer in 'Christmas Vacation'. Anyway, with this case, it doesn't slide around anymore.

6) While the white rubbery portion can collect dirt, it cleans off very easily with just a baby wipe.

Bronco,

The Contour Showcase is the case I have too. I forgot to mention it earlier, I tend to forget it is even there. I am very happy with mine, for all the reasons you mentioned. I got the one with the black rubber because it never looks dirty. Makes the iPod look a little less iPodish, which for me is good. I like the fact that the iPod is so easily removed because I use the dock quite a bit for a line out. The price is pretty good too compared to a lot of the other hard cases.

The Philip brand from Target are just earbuds - and they're the only ones I've tried that don't fall out of my ears. I think it's because they use silicone for the part that sits inside your ear canal. I've never had much use for earbuds for a number of reasons - but these are pretty good.

i would higly recomend a pair of shure's over anything else. properly fitted, they dont move. in my ear at least.

The "ipod-to-go" I think its called... is really good. It will broadcast over any station for about a 100 yards. Its good for parties when every radio in the house is tuned to the same.

Bose has a speaker/dock-in-one that looks very nice. I haven't seen one in person or heard it perform, but judging from its reputation, it's a quality system.

they had it pumping in some electronitcs store. all i can say is it owns up to the reputation. a pretty penny though.

I'm happy with the cheap ($10 I think) cassette that plugs into the iPod to play through the car radio.
