Years ago I got a "iPod Shuffle" that held 240 songs. I downloaded all my favorite songs from all my CDs... and then my hard drive went back and I lost all those hours of work! I swore I'd never go through it again!

Now, living in DC and riding public transportation every day, I'm enjoying the anonymity and "leave-me-the-fu#$-aloneability" of wearing headphones all the time...

I'm back on the bandwagon and I've got a brand new Blue Nano coming in the mail! I'm downloading all my CDs again, and I bought an external drive to back up my files.

I'm ready to embrace the iPod.

Let's talk music files!

The thread starts HERE! GO!

OK. I'll start.

How do I begin to find and make a library of "90s Alternative" music for my iPod?

On Pandora and on my Sirius radio, I could tune to the "90s Alternative" station. But, now, how do I get all that great music on my iPod?

I have some CDs that fit the genre, but I want to get all those great hit songs from that era without having to buy the whole album or searching one band at a time.

Is there a 90s Alternative listing in iTunes where I can draw from?

My old 4gig second generation Nano is just about the best investment I've ever made. I'll probably upgrade it to a 32gb Touch at some point, but I love that little thing.

When I got my new car back in 2007, I bought an Alpine headunit that had iPod integration (my car is a 2006, starting in 2008 Subaru included iPod integration on their stock stereo system... but I wasn't about to pay actual real money for an '08 Impreza), and I haven't carried a CD in my car since, unless I was carrying it home from a store.

I can't really answer your question about sorting music on iTunes, I'm sure there's a way though. I've never been big into downloading music, so when I got my iPod, I spent about two weeks ripping my entire collection to a hard drive. I've bought a few albums on iTunes though when I was going on a long trip and needed something new to listen to, but didn't have time to stop by a music store to pick it up.

I felt dirty buying an Apple product for a few hours, but I fell in love with the thing pretty quick. After having it for three years, it's something I don't think I'll ever want to be without.

Yep there is...sorta. In the iTunes store you can look at other folks mix lists, just go to that section and put "90s alternative" in the search box...I am sure you will find lots of lists.

I still have my first iPod, it is one of the white plain jane models without video...been using it for quite a few years now. I gets used in the car and in a boombox when I am outside. I never use it with head phones or earbuds however. I would not want to be unable to hear what is going on around me, far too many predators out there looking for preoccupied people to prey on.

to avoid losing my songs, i use Sharepod to back up my ipod. it actually runs off your ipod and allows you to backup your songs to any PC.

I use iDump its freeware and it lets you rip songs from your iPod to your computer...So even if the harddrive crashes you can rip all your songs off your iPod and Shuffle without installing anything to the iPod itself.

As for finding 90s alt music...

Well theres two ways to do it.

First you could go into iTunes and the iTunes store and buy the music.

Or second you could be like most of the world and just download the music using a filesharing program. Of course you wouldn't be "buying" the music and theres all those fun debates with that.

Consolidate your library (file, library, consolidate library) it will give you a warning, then go to my documents>music>itunes then copy the itunes folder onto your external. When you need to redo ur comp or w.e you just go to add folder and then go to that itunes folder on your external, or DVD or w.e and it will add your music, applications and videos and stuff. No need to buy anything.

Sharepod is freeware....easy as pie. Plus..you can backup or copy music to ANY PC.

I love mine as much for the podcast as for the music.Talk radio you can listen to anytime you want

I'm an ipod fanatic. I've got a couple of Ipod mini's, a first gen Shuffle, a 2nd gen Nano, and a Gen5 Ipod with video. The wife has a couple of the newer models. I walk and bus to work every day, and listen to the Gen5 all the way to work and back. I'd probably die on the street if my Gen5 ever gave up the ghost.

You are correct, FullOfLead. The "leave-me-the-fu#$-aloneability" of the ipod truly rules. The crazy people on the street never bother you when you have your buds in your ears. Buds and a pair of dark sunglasses allows you to hear and see the world in a great amount of anonymity.

This way you can too... and it's right out of itunes. How much harder could it be?

i'm sure your way works just fine....

I like Sharepod because it take about 2 mouse clicks to back up my iPod...lots of different ways to skin a cat.

In the iTunes store interface on the right hand side is box that says QUICK LINKS. It has a link to Power Search, this will allow you to search for keywords or bands. Just select Music and then select the genre you want and hit search.

Being a middle-aged dude - I never saw the appeal of the MP3 player. I was carrying around the multi-pack of cd's for the car all the time.

But then - I bought my wife an ipod some years ago - pink - and she fell in love with it.

I upgraded her to a Shuffle as she did not like wearing the larger one during workouts - so I inherited the older unit. I quickly bought a leather case for it and started using it and was bit by the bug.

Since then the wife and I bought iPhones, and I have 900+ songs on mine and the collection is still growing.

I'm not really sure if I could get thru the day without it now.

The kids each have shuffles, and my pre-teen son is now bugging me for the ipod touch.

That's an awesome idea; thanks!

And I love your revolver sig. I need to join.:cool:

I too love ipods, it started with a 1GB shuffle and I now own a 4th gen nano but I need a larger capacity. I'm trading that one and debating between the 16GB nano or Itouch. Any pros/cons to either? I love the nano but the touch looks so much more fun.:o I don't know how on earth I'd be able to edc a touch though as all my pockets are full and the nano slips perfectly into my watch pocket.

I hate itunes, and buying anything from them is a ripoff. I downloaded a bunch of songs via Ruckus before they went kaput, and included all my CD's and many from my friends, on my 30 Gig Zune. I have over 4000 songs and usually play them on an endless shuffle. I installed a jack on my car stereo so I can listen in my car, and I have the Remote controlled dock station for the home stereo, which also charges it. I have them all on my computer as well, so unless both the player and the computer go dead at the same time, I will not lose my collection. Zune has a bigger screen than Ipod, and costed me way less. My Brother has an ipod.

I have a 120GB Ipod Classic in black. It's sports an Agent 18 protective clear case and I'm using Bose ear buds.

I backup my collection using SharePod. Using SharePod also allows you to rip music of someone else's Ipod and adding it to yours. I rip it to a folder I call "All Your Music Belong To Us".

What are some good Podcasts to check out?

I like the Dilbert one, but that's the best one I got.
