Has anyone tried using one of those handhekd IR remote thermometers for checking the temp of steel when forging or heat treating. I know that similar type instruments are used in steel mills but has anyone tried in somewhat smaller scale...
I personally have not. Though I believe there are some makers out there using optical pyrometers in forging and "eye ball" heat treating methods. IR would be a fun toy for sure. Especially when hand forging under controlled temp ranges.
I've used one in a steel mill.It doesn't matter where you use it , it measures a relatively small area. I did at one time check my ability to measure the temperature by sight . On a daily basis I did this ,always checking with instruments. Take my word for it ,use instruments any time you can, much more reliable.
