iraq deployment knife??

Some bases have a 3" blade rule for non-issued knives. In the desert, I doubt they'd have any regulations limiting blade length, but if you want to get him something he can use throughout his career, on any base, go 3" or less. The paramilitary would be a great choice, or even a small sebenza (they've gone for $300 on the exchange from time to time). Awesome gesture by the way.

Get him a Benchmade Contego. Around $120
And he'll need a fixed blade for sure. So something like a Becker BK2 or Kabar USMC,
both around $50.

I also second the multi tool idea. Allow me to add that a tomahawk would be an ideal thing to get him as well. I'm sure he gets a standard issue fixed blade, and that really should be enough for him.

If 300 bucks is your price range I would suggest getting him a Leatherman MUT for $100 as a multi tool. And if you must get him a folder get him something inexpensive like an Onatrio Rat 1 for $30.00 (they are indestructible)

Lastly, with the remaining $170.00 get him a nice tomahawk. I would suggest the American Tomahawk Company LaGana Vtac. You can get it for around $100. That would leave you $70.00. Those $70.00 could go towards a nice flashlight.

Use your money wisely, you don't need to spend it all on a single knife. Just look at all the stuff you can get him with $300.00

Multi-tool
Folding knife
Tactical tomahawk
Flashlight

All of these items are essential gear for a soldier.

Get something cheap, because nice knives are frequently stolen in that environment.
I think a grip would be good, or better yet, a SOG flash.

Suggest:
1) Leatherman multitool (MUT); and
2) CS Recon 1 Or CS Kobun/BK2/Esee3.
These are tough, and if lost or stolen, easily replaceable.
And then you can use the rest to get a nice folder for his return (as an incentive :) )

Don't get an Emerson, Emersons are a sham.

meanwhile on the Emerson board...

I own more Emersons than most people here. However, I have seen some extraordinary Emerson collections from a few other guys though. Very nice indeed!

sorry to derail but this caught my attention. Lucy, you have some explaining to do.

Lucy, you have some explaining to do.

No not really, it should be clear that I was joking in both posts. People here take stuff too literally.

1) I don't own that many Emersons, and I'm not rich. I only own 10 of the Emersons mentioned in that post. The rest was me just fantasizing.

2) I don't think think Emersons are a Sham. That was me being ultra sarcastic. Think of it, Emerson knives have been battle proven out in the field for several years and are carried all over the world by elite forces. I would be crazy not to recommend an Emerson knife to a soldier!

Anyways, as much as I would recommend an Emerson I'll still stick to my previous buy "several items instead of 1 expensive knife" idea. I think it will be better for the OP to give his friend an assortment of gear instead of just 1 knife.

Boker Albatros for a simple but beefy folder in good steel and ti and isn't too large.
Leatherman Sidekick or even a more expensive Multi for all the other tools he may need.
Some kind of sharpening system.

All of this will still be under $300 and he'll have everything he needs.

He will be issued a multitool (most likely a gerber, which in my personal opinion is hardly a tool) but it will suit his needs. He may also be issued a decent folder. So i would second the sebenza suggestion. It will last long after the deployment and should provide him some entertainment while he's out there

Two things. 1) He most certainly has enough junk to carry around with him so keep it extremely light. 2) Some soldiers are thieves, and the nature of cohabiting tight space presents opportunity, so don't invest heavily on any one item. Those things considered.

Nobody has brought up the Endura. For $60 you get a 3.75ish inch blade at under 4 ounces. The lockback makes it easy to use with gloves (which is why I carry it at work). The steel is pretty damn good. It isn't indestructible, but I doubt it would be used to a point of breaking. The remaining $240 can go towards:
-Torx set $5-10
-Spyderco Sharpmaker $55
-Flashlight - Streamlight Scorpion $60
-Leatherman Wave or Rebar $50-70

I'd be going for a cheapish knife because it being broken or stolen/lost could happen easily. Also tantos are usually stronger and the tip lasts longer so I'd say.

Benchmade Nimravus Tanto
Benchmade nitrious stryker tanto 912
Benchmade Griptilian tanto

I still have my Army issue Gerber multi tool! Get him a couple of Kershaw's (Blur/Cryo) and a pair of Ray-Bans! Something he won't be afraid to use!!

Who the eff is still getting deployed to Iraq..?

My question also.

Aside from Embassy guards (USMC), the USA completed troop withdrawals in 2011. Embassy marines will be severly limited to what they can carry. If a PMC, then multitools seem the correct carry "knife".

Most other security is by contractors.

Could the OP mean Afghanistan or elsewhere?
