Iron from Meteorites?

Has anyone here ever forged a billet to be used either as a blade or other knife part from an iron meteorite?

I would assume that it would not be a good idea to use one for a blade, unless its chemistry was altered.

Anyhoo, I thought it would be a neeto, if not expensive thing to do.

A few people have done that. From whaty I have read, it is best to do a laminated blade with the meteoritic iron as the outer skin and regular steel as the core/edge. One of Bill Moran's more famous knives was a small damscus bowie that contained some meteoritic iron.

Del Ealy (among others) has made up pattern welded steel using meterorites.

I have a couple marlinspikes using meterorite damascus he made up for me. They are very cool and fun to use.:thumbup:

The price of meteorites varies by their rarity. The Campo, Diablo and Sikote fragments are fairly plentiful and not too expensive. My meteorite collection goes from a 3 Lbs Campo to a very small chip of a Martian and lunar fragment. The rarest I have is rice size piece of the Tagish lake fall. It's a carbonaceos meteorite that is neither stone or iron-nickel.

I have a pound of Campo coarse powder that I will be doing some can welding with soon.

I've done a few meteorite damascus blades. It's a thing of "keep it hot." I have a piece left that is becoming a push dagger.
