iron wood vs N95 dust mask

Do you think a N95 quality dust mask is good for sanding ironwood?
I know N95 with a good seal will filter out the dist particles, does anyone know if iron wood produces any fumes that are toxic. A search only dealt with dust no mention of fumes, I have read that when sanded the stuff stinks like a dead rat.
Cheers Ron.

N95 isn't good enough. Period. It is only preventing 95% of the dusts, and some woods we work with are toxic. So get a better mask.

I looked at that list but it did not have ironwood on it which is what prompted me to post this thread, but the list does seem to cover most woods.
Ron.

Thanks for this thread, Ron. I found this post about finishing desert ironwood which has me feeling a bit nervous about working with it. I only currently have the disposable 3M dust masks with the filter thingies in them (N95).

If anyone can recommend a reasonably priced mask/filter combo and a good place to purchase it, I would be grateful as it's time for me to get something better.

Man I hate typing a reply and then the internet locks up on the comp...

Anyhow I use a 3M 7500 series respirator. It is super cushy on the face. the thing that I really like about it is the exhaled breath is directed down so my faceshield does not fog up at all. The straps are positioned so you can slip off the top strap and keep the mask hanging around yer neck and it is out of the way. Easy access that beer or if you have to answer the phone.

So, here is everything.

7500 series respirator. I have a small face and I needed a large to get a good seal.

If you look in the yellow pages for a lab safety supply shop in the local area you can go try on the stuff they have instead of taking my word for it about the size. Here in Tampa we have a Ritz Safety, I go there. The prices in the links above are comparable for the most part. I purchased my faceshield from them too.

Thanks gixxer, I haven't run across a supply house close by yet but I'm still looking. Does the type of mask you have allow wearing of eyeglasses? Also, do you know what would be the plusses and minuses as compared to this type?
