So, I just got back from another trip to AZ for work. I had hoped to visit ADI and pick out some choice wood whle I was out there. Well, looks like they're on vacation. Then I did a little googling and stumbled on a post on a local classifieds site from a guy who had some Desert Ironwood for sale. He had been collecting it (legally I should add. from fallen, dead trees on privately owned land) for years and was getting ready to retire and move to Florida. Needless to say, he couldn't take it all with him.

I got my hands on over 200lbs of real Sonoran Desert Ironwood! I still have a BIG box being shipped to my office, but here's what I managed to get shipped back with me on the plane...just about 140lbs. That's a 5 gallon bucket in the picture for some scale.

I'm a firm believer that you make your own luck for good deals. If you're not paying attention, you'll never find 'em! Now I just wish I could QUIT paying attention sometimes...good deals get expensive no matter how good they are...

Well, I was down in MD for Father's Day...probably wasn't around. Work this week and then I fly out again next Sunday for a week...*sigh*

I guess you will be bringing some next week to the meeting.
I got an idea on the rolling mill. If it works we will have some soon.

Back before I was into knives I found a huge ironwood tree on his property that had fallen over, it was big enough that we used a forklift to get it back to his house because it wouldn't fit in the back of the truck....then we used it for firewood:foot: :foot: :grumpy:

If I can figure out how to cut some of the smaller stuff in time. I've got a pretty worn blade on the bandsaw that I don't mind wasting at this point.

Would you be interested in selling any of that beautiful stuff?:D

Possibly. Once I get it cut up and see what I have I may be offering some up in the for sale section. It's likely to be a while though. I've got to find the free time to do it...my calendar is FULL right now.

Great score, decker! I'm headed out to AZ this fall and plan on gathering up some wood.

Careful how you go about it! It is illegal to cut any ironwood tree down. It is also illegal to collect any fallen dead wood from public lands. You may not "disturb the desert". If you can find somebody who has been collecting to buy from that's probably the best case (as long as you know it's been taken legally). Alternately, if you know of a dead and fallen tree on private property and have permission from the landowner, you can collect some of that. Take a good chainsaw and a couple of chains though if you plan to cut the stuff up yourself. Also, check the local woodworker's supply houses. They may have some or be able to point you to somebody who does.
