is a .410 shotgun worth getting

410 is a great gun. I Have harvested animals as large as geese with it (on the wing.) The rossi paired barrels are really neat little guns. They will do everything you would ask a survival gun to do. Filling a pot with small game.

You mention camp gun. I am not sure what you expect the gun to do at camp. Plinking 22 is your friend.

I say go for the Rossi. I bought one for my 9 year old son and we have a lot of fun with that little set up. They won't set you back that much with cost and if you hate it you can always find someone to sell it to.

The ammo will cost you more than 20ga., or 12,ga IMO but it is marginal and they are
fun to shoot.

That's my .02 cents

I think it's largely a matter of personal preference. If the ultimate in lightweight shotgunning appeals to you go for it. Myself, I usually hunt with a 12 Ga but will take a 20 instead when I want to go light. But our shooting ranges tend to be longer in the west. I do think the .410 pistols are pretty cool and that they would make really interesting camp guns.

My grandfather used a 410 for years as his rabbit, squirrel gun,was effective for him,and now that I've used it, feel over gunned shooting a 12g at a rabbit! I like #4 or #6 shot with #4 you don't get as many pellets, but it only takes one or two for a clean kill on small game. There alot of fun to shoot, and like others have said, great for teaching people new to shooting or hunting.

I got a Rossi 22/410 youth combo. It's fun and does the job. I got 410 because I thought my kids (14 and 7) could use it. However, it still kicks too much for a kid (to my surprise). If I had it over again, I would get the 22/20.

As posted 410 is more expensive to shoot. I have one in the savage 24 22/410 that my son loves and borrowed away. I gave mygrandson, age of nine, a 410 single shot that he likes but quickly upgraded him to a single 20 which he likes more and is cheaper to shoot. My go to gun is a savage camper 22/20 cylinder bore. I would recommend a reloader if you got one. Regards, Loosearrow

As you all may already know Taurus makes a .410 & 45LC capable handgun called the "Judge".It's an interesting concept, but for SD I'd keep it loaded with the 45LC.

[I know this thread is about shotguns, just though this may be relevant]

I used a .410 Winchester single shot as a boy to hunt squirrels, rabbits, and an occasional lucky shot on doves. The Mossberg Home Defender used to be made in that guage. It is deady at close range and will not blow your house down. I gave mine to my sister in trade for her 20 ga Mossberg pump. She preferred the lighter recoil of the .410. I can easily shoot the 20 ga one-handed. I'd go with the 20 gauge. More pellets per shot, but not as hard kicking as the 12 gauge.

I know of a fair amount of guys that use .410 for upland birds,(pheasant ,grouse, quaill ect.)and make many good kills but those guys have great dogs,(pointers) allowing for decent shot set up and closing the range, My father in law and myself on the other hand hunt with a lab, and he gets pretty excited and has tendency to pop up birds before we are ready and need a bit more distance out of our shells so we both carry 12 ga. and I really don't specailize for hunts like some others, I only own a 12 ga so thats what I shoot:D and don't think that will change, 12ga is just so versitile.

If price is your thing, you might also look at a New England ? shotgun from the White Trash Heaven a.k.a. Wal-Mart. They run about $100...

Do you own one of their shotguns? I have toyed with getting one of their 12gauges to keep in my truck. Used, they are dirt cheap, just never knew anyone who owed or shot one.

You could also look into a .410 that can shoot a .45LC.

Here's my cheapy version. I haven't shot it yet but plan on doing that this Sunday.

Is that a single or a double?

Those FMJ/Leinad gunlike objects kick like hell on account of the grip design, but at least you've got a foregrip on that version. I saw a pick on another forum of a fellow who fitted a rubber Redhawk grip onto one of those things.

After you fire it let us know what you think about it.

A friend got one of the Taurus Model 45 Ten last year and I got to shoot some .45 with it. He mistakenly bought 3" 410 shells instead of 2 1/2" so I didn't get a chance to try it as a 410 but overall I liked it a lot.

jds1,

the model is the Remington spr-94...They are availible in .22 lr/.410 .22 mag/.410 and 223/12

As already stated, "The .410 is an expert's gun. Unless you're real good with a shotgun, you're going to need to practice a lot to use it well." Which is exactly why I would advise someone to get one... for the proficiency and pride of being capable.

My grandfather always used an o/u .410 for upland birds, and trained me when I was barely in elementary school. A lot of memories, and a smile, when I still down pheasants and quail with it.

Although I've never used one personally for extended periods of time, I have shot a couple of them. They're rather crude, but they shoot pretty straight and seem reliable enough. The only problem I've personally seen was that sometimes the shell ejector does not work on them, and you have to use a cleaning rod or stick to shove the shell out. They look like they'd rust easily, too, the bluing is not very good.

That being said, for a beater/truck gun, I think it would work. Know a couple guys who hunt with them almost exclusively, and they work OK. Personally, I'd save up the extra money for a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500, both of those are much better guns, and ones that I would actually trust my life on.

As far as the .410 goes, if you're looking for a gun to have fun shooting small game, go for it. You need to be a really good shot, though. As has been said before, they're OK at short ranges. I rarely shoot anything less than 30 yards, and it's usually running away very fast, so I'll stick with 20 or 12.

JW, don't kick it around any longer... The .410 H&R is one tough gun. If you come down anytime soon, you can shoot mine. I got it for 50.00 at a pawn shop cause it was rusty, cleaned it up, shoots great.

My grandfather bought an H&R in 1905 and I gave to my son last spring to use. I bought a Black Prince to replace it. A .410 is not an expensive hunting gun. For just target shooting it is without reloading. I like it's light weight for grouse hunting. Used it on squirrels and rabbits too.

I have an old Savage 410/22 OU. It is a great gun. Hammer selector for upper or lower barrels. The .410 is great for rabbits and squirrels. A little small for game birds on the wing unless you are really good. On the up side you can use slugs for bigger game. You can find them at gunshows but interest in them has increased over the past few years and they are now getting up in price $250-500 depending the the condition and caliber.

I grew up wth a single shot .410 and ALWAYS bagged my limit of dove and quail and bunny WAY before my step father's 870 and 1100 shooting safari buddies. If I had a choice, I'd get a single shot 20ga for price and performance reasons, but you can take anything from dove to mule deer with a .410.
