I think it was my post that was misunderstood. What I was saying was that the question of worth is indeed (after a certain point) highly subjective. This was one of the first points that was made when this thread was started. Since then, it has been made in about 50% of the posts. The thread has gone in circles, and I don't think anyone is covering any new ground. I'm surprised that it has lasted this long. In that regard, I compare it to the Busse - nobody is denying that they are tough, durable knives, but the underlying question of whether they are 'worth it' is subjective. Much like the thread, which has undeniably demonstrated durability and quality discourse, but is, at this point of uncertain (or, subjectively determined) value.
My opinion on the original question has been expressed a few times already.
To recap, though - for me, I don't find Busse knives to be 'worth it', though I do not in any way doubt their quality. I find them to be expensive, and, given X amount of dollars, I would rather purchase high-quality custom knives, support our local makers, and have an input in the design process than buy a Busse. Also, while INFI sounds like a great steel, I do not believe that it is necessarily a category above the rest of the pack, and therefore reject the assertion that Busse knives are inherently a category above the rest of the pack (this has been suggested by a few). Further, I can't get into the whole Busse culture thing, but I don't begrudge anyone for enjoying it. Finally, I like natural handle materials and leather sheaths, and I am not a fan of choils. So, there you go - Busses may be great knives, but they do not appeal to me, and I personally feel that they are a little pricey, given the cost of comparable customs. Your mileage may vary.
All the best,
- Mike
