Is a Busse Worth it?

Now I'm not trying to say it did poorly, but that kind of activity could have been done with a buck 119. No not nearly as efficient, but with that wood, the buck 119 would have done all of that just more slowly. I'm almost 100% positive that Joezilla's designed Rodan - from condor would do all of that and its street price is $20. Heck, take a look at the reserected misanthropist thread where the OP baton his mora#1 through lead pipe not once, but complete deconstructs the pipe with his knife.

I thought this would be misunderstood.

I should have written; How do you specifically Mentor, as the OP decide if a knife is worth it?

I think it was my post that was misunderstood. What I was saying was that the question of worth is indeed (after a certain point) highly subjective. This was one of the first points that was made when this thread was started. Since then, it has been made in about 50% of the posts. The thread has gone in circles, and I don't think anyone is covering any new ground. I'm surprised that it has lasted this long. In that regard, I compare it to the Busse - nobody is denying that they are tough, durable knives, but the underlying question of whether they are 'worth it' is subjective. Much like the thread, which has undeniably demonstrated durability and quality discourse, but is, at this point of uncertain (or, subjectively determined) value.

My opinion on the original question has been expressed a few times already.

To recap, though - for me, I don't find Busse knives to be 'worth it', though I do not in any way doubt their quality. I find them to be expensive, and, given X amount of dollars, I would rather purchase high-quality custom knives, support our local makers, and have an input in the design process than buy a Busse. Also, while INFI sounds like a great steel, I do not believe that it is necessarily a category above the rest of the pack, and therefore reject the assertion that Busse knives are inherently a category above the rest of the pack (this has been suggested by a few). Further, I can't get into the whole Busse culture thing, but I don't begrudge anyone for enjoying it. Finally, I like natural handle materials and leather sheaths, and I am not a fan of choils. So, there you go - Busses may be great knives, but they do not appeal to me, and I personally feel that they are a little pricey, given the cost of comparable customs. Your mileage may vary.

All the best,

- Mike

Well, if I knew how to read the difference between Mentor and Merost (who actually is the OP) I wouldn't have asked the question.

That being said Mentor, thanks for the response since I'm sure the question had you saying WTF. Oh, and I don't like choils either, knocked the micarta scales off my Busse's and replaced them with bone and purpleheart, and gave them leather pants.

Sounds like some awesome mod work. Good stuff!

If you feel bored by the post all you have to do is look elsewhere.

Truthfully, it would have been great, no excellent if you had posted that video on a separate thread in W&Ss, called it whatever you like. However, this tired old thread never needed any resurrection.

In a queer irony here I am continuing its bumping up to the top and pushing some poor thread that should deservedly have its 15 minutes of fame to page 2 prematurely.

kgd...yea, what are you thinking?!? Wait, now I did it! I suck too! And to think the poor jerky receipt thread is getting virtually no attention. The shame!

This all makes me want to start an "Is a Randall, Strider, Airkat, Reeve and any other expensive brand/maker worth it?" thread.

Don't kill me for my answer... :D

IMHO Busses are very highly overpriced.
If I can get a drop foged, zone tempered knife, which is extremely strong and a very good slicer for 120 $,why would I give a couple of hundreds of dollars more for a Busse ?

For me they're a luxury item - like an expensiv car.For example a Skoda would take you from point A to point B.So would do a Mercedes-Benz or Audi, but some people who can afford it buy the more expensive car. ;)

Generally I can say :

Is it worth the price - absolutely NO !
Is it worth having it - hell yeah :D
