A couple of yeas ago I read some speculation that a Chinook IV would be similar to a Chinook III, but lighter. Possibly by using titanium liners, etc.

Hopefully less expensive materials could be found !!!

Is a Chinook IV in the works?

w/ a trainer model?

Nothing planned. James said he had some ideas for a newer version, but we've not had a chance to chat.

I agree, El Tigre. I can think of no improvements to my Chinook III.

If pressed I'd say weight.

I live in SW USA and the uniform for half the year is light shorts and light short sleeved shirt or tee shirt. And I learned my Chinook would drag my shorts down at inopportune times. As shorts are belt-less, just some elastic. Even if the shorts have a drawsting it gets set once, loose enough to doff and don, then forgotten.

I started carrying my Delica as a result. BTW, I really like the Delica. It isn't the sledgehammer the Chinook III is, but it sure does what I need just fine.

I mention the Chinook III's weight as I still would like to carry it w/ more than belted trousers or jeans.

Chinook III is perfect. No changes. A new Keating knife would be great, but no need to change what is already perfect.

Hi Scott,

The dinosaurs were perfect....for a while. Perfection changes as time moves on. New knowledge, materials, design improvements, invention, laws, etc. always cause change. Perfection is a moving target in time.

You can't step into the same river twice and what's "best" today is different tomorrow.

Haha, ok then Sal, let me change my statement. The Chinook III is perfect NOW. Perfection comes in multiple forms for me. If you can find a way to make it a little lighter and give me a deeper usable finger choil with jimping on a new Chinook design, then that will be.....well...that would be just perfect :) It's good that the owner of a company thinks that perfection is a moving target in time, its bad if I think that, because then I wouldn't want to buy your PERFECT knives. Which I do think that 2-3 of them ARE perfect. As in, I don't want any changes at all. The Chinook III, D2 FG Paramilitary, and my Chinese Lum.

Now....if it is possible for you to do a run of a FG Paramilitary in S90v, half g10 and half titanium with the RIL compression lock....I think I would sell my kidney and my cars to buy as many as I could, and then, I would bathe in them. Ok, maybe not. But I would buy 4 and retract my statement of perfection not moving

Well I've had my Chinook III for about 6 months, and have only really started putting it to use in the last couple of weeks after putting a convex grind on it. While the weight of the beast can take some getting used to, its actually one of the main reasons I use it... Heft has it's uses occasionally.
At the moment I cant see it needing much in the way of improvement. The only little gripe I have is that in tip down carry (my preferred carry) the knife doesn't sit so well in the pocket and the jimping (which I love) tends to snag on the pocket when drawing the knife. No major really, as all is solved my carrying it tip up.

It would be Very interesting to see what improvements Mr Keating has in mind though...

I loved my Chinook III, and I plan on picking another one up soon (traded it for an interesting knife).

If you were to "improve" on it, I'd say BBL, thick carbon fiber scales with the peel-ply finish, M4 blade, and keep the clip.

Of course, I like it just as much if you didn't change anything. ;)

You know what's best, always do.

OK .... 2 potential improvements ... in addition to becoming lighter.

1) Wave feature. (I really like my waved delica)

2) Practice/trainer Chinook (w/ wave, when and if)

The Chinook is as classically Spyderco as the Military and the paramilitary...How about a Foliage Green G-10 Version in D2?

Give me a bigger pivot pin, and I'd be happy.
Titanium liners would be cool too(avoid those lint-trap holes), but the pivot is the only thing I think really needs an upgrade.

The only thing that I really don't like about the III is the lockback. It's a preference thing, but if it were a compression lock or BBL, I'd be very attracted. Beautiful knife.

I have had all 3 versions of the Chinook, each time I heard about the next version I sold or traded the one I had to get the new one.
I'm happy with mine.

I really loved my Chinook 2 but stupidly traded it off. I would love to get ahold of another one. A Chinook 4 would be great with a chinook 2 blade and a bbl or compression lock.

Chinook 3 is my favorite Spyderco at the moment. It's alot of knife for the money.

Now a G10 S30V Stretch for 120 bucks would...........well you know.
