Is a Fatty Game Warden even useable?

I am looking to trade into a fatty Game Warden with a .27" thick blade. Will I be able to use this knife in the woods and on small game, or would I be better off looking for a normal thickness Game Warden.

Also, if somebody has a pick of this knife showing the thickness, that would be great.

I have one, and I use it for stripping long lenghts of commercial size copper wire. It works great. It is a little heavy for edc, but it can be done. I put a thinner convex edge on it to help it slice, and it works great. A thinner model would be more useful though.

Very well stated.^^^

I am one who likes knives that fall in the "anorexic" category. I had a fatty Warden and liked it but sold it. I prefer a thinner version.

My recommendation is buy the Black Tie GW that Dobywon has for sale in the EX. Those are perfect IMO.

yes they are very useable, i dressed a large snapping turtle with one over the summer. also it's my go to-no break user when doing demo work. paired with paul's hatchet, it's a killer wrecking crew.

there is a pic of one in my trade thread. i hope this help's ya out.

Useable? yes

Is it the most suitable for your stated purpose? Not by a long shot. The thinner GWs will be easier to use. Of course, if it's all about the cool factor and you don't care about the extra effort involved... :)

.270, .220, .170, .140

I used mine on an elk, though mine is only .22 pumpkin. For soft tissue stuff they work fine. They are thick for other stuff like cutting apples, whittling etc. I have edc'ed mine for over a year now if I remember correctly.

You would want to pair it up with a longer blade for butchering work, but for skinning and cleaning it will be fine. On the up side, a fatty would never have an issue with breaking if the SHTF.

Thx guys, I am the one offering it for trade. I haven't used it extensively but even with its factory edge, this knife cuts quite well, despite its girth. :D
At least the OP can decide based on objective datapoints now.

That black tie looks really nice, unfortunately I have to trade from my stock of folders right now because I am pretty low on cash.

Thanks for all the replies, I've decided to look for something thinner.

Great advise!!!;)

A .125 Cultie would work great for what you describe. Great hunting knife with its the perfect blade width, blade heigth, and straight handle. If you go with a GW I would stay away from any thicker than the thinnest .140's.
You can still find the .140 GW's pretty easy... for now at least.

The porky small knifes usually have a pretty extreme hollow grind - or at least the original Off-Dutys did. You can get the edge as sharp as anything else. If you need to cut through something, it's going to start to bind when you get towards the spine. This might be good if you're cutting something that will wedge apart, like veggies.

I think the thinner blades are more than adequate strength wise for the task you listed, and are less weight to carry around. The thicker stock will still get the job done, if you want to surprise people.

My experience of knives in that size is that the thinner the stock the better they work for what you usually use them for...I would go for .140 or .170...Infi is plenty tough enough in those sizes and they will take a better cutting edge...I don't mean "sharper"...that can be a "constant" if they are all shaving sharp....I mean it will require less effort to cut and the cuts will bite deeper for the same effort....very noticeable if carving wood...less so on flesh unless fine cutting for smoking jerky or working on fish where it is noticeable...ditto on food prep...thicker knives really need a much deeper blade to work as well...like chef's knives...IMO...but each to their own....

The Fatter, the better!! For a GW. :D

:barf::barf:

IMHO, small knives should be skinny. The only GWs I have are 0.14", and I'm STILL waiting for an Anorexic GW.

The small HACK that we have seen this year in the GW profile would be a GREAT knife if it was half the thickness.

Infi is an absolutely incredible steel! I do not recommend anything over .175 unless you are moving into the 6 inch or higher range for blades. Choppers benefit from a thicker stock, but the gw and other small length blades do not need such a beefy steel. IMHO. However, I am sure as always there is an exception to the rule. Maybe try holding some blades with varying thickness and see what feels best. Then you can choose the blade made of the magical Infi.

hmmm... I have had differnt sized one and I would have to agree with most here, to actually use, I loved the BAD, which is .125
I would love to have a fat one to collect or add to my collection though
