Is a folding knife over 4 inches worth owning?

I had a 6" Hold Out. It was super fun. But I never took it out in public because if I saw a mirror or some reflective glass I'd probably call the cops on myself.

Had? You got rid of it? It’d still be nice to have around the house, sir. Very useful for helping your cat vanquish the invisible aliens.

The Cold Voyager XL uses magic, I’m convinced. That puppy somehow looks like a regular knife when clipped in the pants pocket.

There’s lots of reasons a person would want or need a larger knife, If you live in an urban setting and have an office job a smaller knife might be all you need but if you live in a rural area and or work a job that involves heavy duty tasks you would probably need something more substantial.

A persons job and lifestyle will have a bearing on the need but personal preference and legal restrictions will be a consideration as well.

I don’t know, it seems to me that the restrictions and laws limiting the size or design of a knife are out of the mindset where a knife is considered a weapon used for evil intent or mischief instead of a tool used to cut materials or in ordinary tasks. Personally I wouldn’t want to live in a place where I was restricted from having what I need or want.

I have one and I like it. Yeah, it's a little heavy, but that's OK. I carry it from time to time.

Corollary question... Is a fixed blade under 3.5" worth owning?

While I don't at the moment own a folder over 4", I would certainly consider the right one. Conversely, I wouldn't look twice at a fixer under 3.5"

So it's more about folders being practical for 99% of what I need and how I carry, rather than the length.

Yes, fixed blades are easier to clean. There are other reasons, but that's a big one for the shorter fixed blades I use.

I like blades that are just under 4" so I can see where some people would want blades longer than 4". Not long ago my state had a 5.5" limit so I was determined to buy a Spyderco Tatanka and carry it just because I could. Then our laws changed and my little joke for carrying a 5.5" blade doesn't mean anything anymore. I liked the style of the Tatanka but I've never seen or handled one, it might have proven impractical for me. I've owned a variety of blades in the 4" range, the ZT 0200 was the one that crossed the line for me into impractical territory.
