Is a friction folder a slip joint?

I figured this is the place place to ask this question. I say no, they are two different and distinct mechanisms.

The Bob T is also not a slipjoint, it may help in your other thread to state exactly what you are looking for as far as the mechanism goes.

a slip joint has a back spring that puts downward pressure on the back of the blade to hold it open. a friction folder is just two slabs of material to make up the handle with nothing keeping it open but the pressure of the slabs.

No. A friction folder has no spring, is opened with a "lever" on the tang end of the blade, held in place by a tight fit and you are holding the lever when it's open so it won't close while being used. Here are a couple of bad pics of one I made a few years ago..Someone will post better pics I'm sure.

great knife pipeman

The curly maple was a load of firewood that I got a few years ago ;-(
2 cords of presentation grade curly cut into 16 inch pieces. Oh well, i have enough to make knife handles for life.
He's another fun friction folder that I have posted before.

Pipeman and John..you guys are great, I like the ff's that have a longer length of metal on the back, just seems a lot safer. Great work, gotta love the primitive look of friction folders.

Thanks Jesse, I love the simple function of friction folders.

John, as always, your knives and sheaths are amazing. Beautiful work.

Best regards

Here's a little FF that I made for my Father in law when he turned 90 a couple of years ago. The handle is beautifully weathered Moose antler that was shot in Nova Scotia about 100 years ago and the steel is from an old butcher knife of the same vintage. His Father lived to be 104 ;-))

Not a slipjoint, but for sure a predecessor with really ancient roots. I personally don't see the allure in friction folders but to each his own.

That moose antler FF previously posted by Pipeman is real nice though. I'm sure Dad is quite proud to own that.
