Is A Grip. a Grip. Without The Clip ?

On my Cold Steel Ti Lite 4 the pocket clip immediately felt in the way and I couldn't wait to take it off. I have used it with and without and the pocket clip is never going back onto the Ti Lite. The knife is way better to handle without the clip.

I just got my first BM Griptillian. I have used the knife for two work days with the pocket clip and tonight I took it off. Just to see what that was like. Since the basic black handle is so thick I planned to carry the Grip in a belt pouch anyway so I could get my hand in my pocket. I really wanted the large handle just not in my pocket. (the pouch clips on so no belt required).

My first impression is the pocket clip was an essential part of the ergonomics of the handle and that without the clip the shape of the handle was unfullfilling (as it were) . . . less useful.

Surprise. I'm really surprised.

What do you all find ? Anyone take off the clip only to put it back on ? Anyone prefer the Griptillian with no pocket clip ?

Am I getting just a little too into the weeds here . . . perhaps I should forget all this and merge back into the real world before it's too late and I can't find my way back ?

And it just came to me . . . the next big thing in tactical excellence . . . the mod that shows the world you are "one of the few" . . .
Are you ready.
No really this is it.
This is really IT I tell you . . .

A
pocket clip . . .
On
Both
SIDES
! ! ! !
Hunh ? . . . hunh ? . . . am I right ?
Oh man I need to wake some one up and tell them about this . . . .
:p

I don't know whether you're asking a question or making a convoluted statement on what you prefer.

I like a pocket clip. I'm right-handed and carry tip-up in my right front pocket. Works well for me.

Both . . . but specifically about the Benchmade Griptillian with the basic handle.

Because I don't want any of the knife to show I usually take the clip off. Every time I have liked the handle more this way. I use self made pocket sheaths or holsters to hold the knife in position. I alternate between folders and small fixed blades.

I hear that !
Have you tried the Griptillian ? The full size one ?
It's kind of thick to have in the pocket but a good work knife.

On some knives, the clip will add some thickness to the handle, good for smaller, shorter knives and it can add some texture or layers to add some grip on knives that need added grip. It can also help in placement and knowing which way a knife is held. It can also be used as another choil of sorts if it's the spoon type our has a dip in it.

As in most cases, whether a user likes it on likely depends on the knife being used and the (size of the hands of) user.

The Grip comes with BM's biggest and heftiest clip. Stupidly strong and produced a long time ago, so it's big for a clip. Might want to try another clip like the arrow one (smallest) or their more recent deep pocket clip which is slim. BM knives all include free replacement clips upon request. Just don't take advantage.

I find most any knife will be more comfortable to use without the clip, including the Grip. The problem for me is if it's removed or on the wrong side, the manipulation of the knife one handed is much more difficult. The clip gives you something to really grab onto while keeping your fingers out of the path of the blade.

I like both my full size and mini Grips with the BM deep carry clip. I tried putting an aftermarket deep carry clip on my Mini after I put aftermarket scales on it to match better. It only took a couple days for me to switch back to the BM clip. The aftermarket clip just didn't feel right with the knife in hand. On my Auto Presidio I have the regular BM clip on it and that feels right for it.

Hey. I have the Presidio too and could never get the knife on with the regular clip. Pocket, belt, waist, nothing. It was was too strong. Haha. There's some space between the handle & clip on the Grip with the elevated mount point.

I played magical clip with it and ended up using the arrow clip. super low key on the Presidio. Barely felt in hand and pocket, barely noticeable. I can put it on too.

Like I said newbie here; first few days with this knife, this is my first BM, my first Griptillian and first time using an axis lock.

I discovered, duh, that if I work the axis lock from one side with just my thumb then I can relax and keep my fingers out of the way of the blade. (get a good hold on the knife without the clip). Up till now I have been working the lock from both sides of the handle with index finger AND thumb. Without the clip that wasn’t easy and brainless like it was with the clip on.

I am not one to sit and flip a knife while watching TV etc.
but
guess what I was doing once I got this knife ?

Yup

Good to know about the access to new clips direct from BM.
Thank You

I hope it was obvious I was KIDDING about a clip on both sides. :)

I too have considered having a clip on both sides for ambidextrous pocket use. No joke.

Serious tactical preparation.

Oh, I also use the clip to grip with the last 3 fingers to open the lock with just the thumb from the opposite side. Thought that was normal. It's awesome, right? Hard to beat. I also sit around flipping knives. Meh.

Depends on the knife for me. If it's one I'm going to pocket carry, the clip comes off. However, I have found the without the clip it is a wee bit harder to get a good grip to open some knives.

Funny, I too considered a clip on each side of my Griptilian.

I tried a deep carry clip on my Grip and ended switching back to the normal clip. Don't like the knife without a clip of some sort. Don't like Benchmade's split arrow clip on the Griptilian but love it on the Benchmade Volli.

Also own a BM 531. It is a nice knife stock from the factory but, a deep carry clip really makes a difference.

Serious tactical preparation. (two pocket clips)
Now you're scaring me . . . we must be psychically linked some how . . . break the link before it's too late . . .
I knew I kept that aluminum foil helmet for a reason . . .
hahaha

Don't like the knife without a clip of some sort.

That's what I found out today.
The stock parkerized clip is back on. Makes the grip for using the axis lock easy again. After all that is a good bit of why I bought this knife; that and the thick rounded handle.

Messes with getting the knife into my belt pouch though. It's always something . . .

They tell me that if I would only shut up and buy a Sevenza all my troubles would be over . . . that I would even be able to spell and carry a tune for the first time in my life . . .

I'm beginning to believe

I would not have thought it but as much as I really like the Spyderco Wire clip the sheet metal clip on my Para 2 may be even better or at least as nice to use.

That said, since my new knife arrives tomorrow, knock on wood, today and tomorrow are the last days for a month I will have to try the Para with no clip (carried in my ammo clip pouch that I use for the Ti Lite).

So off came the clip and away we went. I like it that way as well. No problem using the lock and I enjoy the symmetrical feel of the handle with no clip.

A Grip may not be a Grip without the clip but the Para is right with it either way.

Once I get past the one month of using my knew knife arriving tomorrow I suspect that I will alternate with the Para 2 clip and no clip because I like it so much with AND without. The clip isn't in the way which surprised me since it comes tip down putting the clip under my finger when holding the knife parallel to the ground plane. I tried it briefly tip up but call me crazy I think I prefer a long knife tip down. Or this knife that way anyway.

By Friday I will be EDCing a fixed for my one month commitment to one knife. I love all this silliness.

I find with my Grip, as well as my 940, that the clip indeed makes opening and closing the knife much, much easier. I put my pinky, ring and middle finger on the deep carry clip for added ergos and traction.

I can relate OP.

I carry my mini's without clips and my larges with clips. Works for me.
And I'd say;
A Grip is a Grip - It's always a Grip.
Even when it don't have no clip. ;)

Stuff_things,

Interesting about the 940. I see one in my future but not soon. Dentil bills eating up the majority of my bucks.
How do you feel about the clip placement on the 940 does it seem to be out of the way or is it pretty noticeable when using the knife ?

Damn those teeth anyways.

The 940 is my favorite "mid-level" knife :)

I use a deep carry clip but haven't noticed any hot spots. The clip actually fits in the swell of my palm or the fatty part of my hand directly below my fingers. Of course this all depends on the hands of the user but to answer you question subjectively, no, I don't notice the clip enough to complain about it.

Buy one. I think you'll like it!
