I was getting ready to make some scales for a knife I own. Is a step drill bit really necessary? Couldn't you make the cut using a thin drill bit first, then follow it with the larger bit on top?

not necessary but saves a lot of work and makes your life easier.
Also is more accurate.

Ok, so its just a convenience factor, the same drilling can be done using 2 separate drill bits then. That's all I needed to know. If I get into this I will buy one, but for now I will try my first without it.

You won't get square shoulders in the second hole--Butch

I use step drills for a bunch of stuff, I want to upgrade to a counterbore with pilot. just as accurate as a step drill but you get the square shoulders. Sheffield's has counterbores in the sizes needed for corbys and such.
