Is aftermarket support important to you?

Depends on the knife some I buy with every intention on adding a clip or scales others I plan to keep as is.

Agree with this man on ZT 0393. In fact I did not pull the trigger on the knife due to the stock scales until seeing this exact picture. I was about to buy yours as a backup but someone else claimed it before me.

For most knives, however, aftermarket parts are not a factor of my purchases.

With so many EDC options available on hand I'll trick out some, because why not... There are reputable aftermarket options available that work pretty well. Guns, knives, I've done the same to every muscle car I've owned to make it my own.

It's a plus, but not having it isn't a minus. I'm not opposed to modding, and have several modded knives, but I've never not purchased a knife because there weren't a bunch of companies making aftermarket scales for it.

I consider it a factor in price. If the warranty is bad or they handle support poorly, then I probably won't buy expensive knives from them unless they really undercut competitor prices

It does factor into my decision making. It's quite rare for me to love everything about any particular production knife, and aftermarket options make it easy to improve the aspects of a knife that might bother you.

I buy inexpensive (<$30) knives for use, so if they break or don't work I just toss them out and get another.

Aftermarket accessories is always going to be a numbers game. There’s a reason knives like the griptilian, PM2, Bugout, 940 have a lot of aftermarket support… it’s because so many people buy the knives. If I wanted strong aftermarket support, I would buy one of those knives.

It's not an important factor for me when I buy a knife. It's an added bonus that I discovered after buying a Bugout.

To me personally? No.

In general? Absolutely. I haven't ever really had an issue serious enough that I felt the need to use a company's warranty services on a knife, but I know others have. And in any case, companies standing behind their product is always to be applauded.

Yes, and because those knives are so popular, and produced in such quantities, people (like myself) want theirs to stand out from the crowd.

it would be nice, as the oem discontinued some of my favorite knives. it would be cool to have replacement parts.

I think OP is talking about “aftermarket parts” (scales, screws, etc.), not “after sale service” (warranty and spa).

After a second read, I think you're right. My mistake.

Incidentally, then my answer definitely swings into the "Yes" column, because any time you can make something truly yours, can't be a bad thing. Thankfully, we do have a lot of guys out there, both here, as well as on FB and IG who can do pretty much anything imaginable. For a price, anyway!

I had originally had a warranty related response typed out as well and had to go back and change it. I think “support” in the title threw me for a loop because I don’t really view that as “support”, more “accessories”… as the parts can be hit or miss on tolerances.

I don't have that cool knife , but I do have the same keyboard ! :)

Mostly not, but some knives are just crying out for a makeover (like the black, plastic Griptilion handle). If I really don't like the way a knife looks or the handle isn't to my tastes, I'll usually either wait until the company do something different or get something else since there's always something else out there. I didn't like the ESEE handle, but as soon as their rounded HM handle version of the ESEE 4 came out I got one.

I am extremely picky. I've discovered I can simply email a knifemaker exact specs down to colors and a few weeks later exactly what I thought I wanted arrives. I'm sort of ruined now.

As far as mass produced knives go, I would very much enjoy if all companies had a custom system similar to Benchmade. You can pick steel, scale material, color, screws, clips... Id rather just order what I want instead of tracking down everything after the fact.
