Is an SAK all you need?

I got my first SAK, a black Alox Cadet and I don't miss my Spydercos or Kershaws that much. I find the SAK more useful with the screwdrivers and bottle opener. I'm gonna get a Farmer for outdoors as it has the wood saw. Is an SAK all you need for general EDC uses?

ETA: I have a Classic coming from KW for my keychain

OK, I'll bite. A SAK is perfectly adequate for 99.9% of my cutting chores, but I carry my Paramilitary 2 because I like it. The Farmer is a great outdoors EDC. I gave mine away, so now I carry my trusty Explorer, which just won't die.

I always carry a SAK and usually have a second knife in my pocket of some kind. But the SAK gets 95% of the use whether I am in town, around the house, or in the woods. I technically carry two SAKs but I don't consider the small one on my keychain a real knife.

As a solo EDC, sure it'll do for most jobs but there's gonna that .01% of the time it won't do, then you'll need something else.

I can get by most times with one traditional folder but I like the option of having another, so when it comes SAKs I carry my Alox Farmer and either a good lockblade of fixed blade.

A man can easily get by day-to day with a SAK. I carry one every day, and it's usually the only knife I use.

Is an SAK capable of doing all of my EDC tasks? Yes. Is it going to do those tasks as well as my dedicated folders? No.

Aside from the fact that I can get my folders open and closed faster, I just enjoy carrying them. I get no enjoyment from using multitools or SAKs for my EDC tasks, and I can count the number of times I have needed the non-knife tools on my multitools on one hand (excluding a bottle opener, which I carry on my keychain anyway). And that's with over a full year of carry before I decided to ditch the unnecessary weight.

Yes, but it doesn't give piece of mind with protection and doesn't have as much pride of ownership as a bigger, more pricery knife.

That being said, I EDC my Victorinox alox Cadet on my keys and I love the thing. It truly can do 99.9% of the stuff you need, but that massive .1% "what if" life or death situation doesn't make it the end all knife for me.

If Victorinox was more in touch, they could make the ultimate knife if they wanted too.... Basically an Alox Cadet or Soldier with a proper clip and scissors would sell like crazy.

They have some awesome 111mm knives with one handed opening but for some reason they are left handed bias

Pretty much, I carry a mechanic when at work. I can open paint cans, cut out caulking, cut plastic, light drywall repairs,

Pull nails, remove switch plates, and outlet plates with the screwdriver, list keeps going.

For the 2% it does not cover.
A good hefty EDC.
Like a PM2 or simular

All we need? Yeah, that's probably true, depending on how we define need. I just like to have more options, like a quick-deploying folding knife in the unlikely event that a dog clamps down on my leg, or a meth addict puts me in a headlock or a girl gets her hair caught in an escalator. And a Leatherman Rebar for extracting myself from a stuck elevator during an earthquake while Godzilla is attacking. And Streamlight ProTac 2AAA light. And a revolver. And Sharpie. Honestly, I would feel unprepared with just a SAK. It all hinges on how we view the world around us, and our subjective perception of "need". The guy with only a SAK is probably more sane than the more paranoid guy who carries all kind of gear, but OTOH there are many people alive today merely because they were paranoid and acted on it.

For most people and most little EDC tasks any SAK is probably adequate. I just love carrying my larger modern locking folders. I've had a SAK and a few other traditionals and I absolutely never wanted to carry them as my only blade, and I only want to carry one blade. Besides the tools (which I don't ever find myself needing, and if I did I'd get a multi-tool), my larger 3-3.5" blades are much more capable. And in the 0.00001% chance that I would need to defend my life with my knife, I would be very, very sad if all I had was a SAK.

In a nutshell, yeah.

The big difference is that we, those of us on this knife based forum are not the regular joe. We are the obsessed, the knife knuts. We're like the car nuts, the bike nuts, or all the other affictionado's of a cult worship item. If you look at the rest of the non knife obsessed world, some get by everyday with just a basic ask, and a heck of a lot of people don't even carry a knife these days. Lets face it, in modern day life there's a little need of much knife for most of us. Not many of us are homesteading in the Alaska bush country, or dropping into enemy territory on a high speed black ops mission. For most of us office workers, factory workers, a SAK will open the mail, UPS boxes, slice up lunch, dammed plastic blister packages, or whatever. Even in the building trades, there's not really much need of a knife, and most construction workers now carry a folding utility knife like a Husky, Stanley, or Super knife that uses replaceable blades.

But for us, we have to have the latest shiny sharp that catches our eye, and we're never satisfied for long. The search for the perfect knife goes on long after any sane person would be happy with whatever is in the pocket. And since the largest knife company on earth is Victorinox, Making more SAK's every year than any three other knife companies, they must be enough for most of the rest of the non knife knut world.

A SAK makes a fine edc.

Absolutely. But I do enjoy/like/appreciate one handed opening a great deal as well because it lessens the time I have a knife in my hand, and sometimes that's an important factor to consider, irrespective of how unthreatening my Cadet actually is.

Pretty much the way I feel, but I have to say that I would be unhappy with just a tiny SAK like the Classic. Just not big enough to do any serious cutting beyond opening envelopes and "office things".

Probably, but it would be less than ideal for alot of things like when you need strength, long blade length and hand filling grip for security and comfort like I need at work quite often. But it would still work and thats the point, which is why my dad wont carry anything other than a sak.

For what I do, I would say a multitool > SAK only because I find the full size pliers very handy + locking blade + saw + screwdrivers + etc.

But, like others have said, a SAK would get most people thru their day just fine.

I have been EDC'ing a Huntsman for about a month. I don't even remember why I started carrying a SAK. I have always carried either a Benchmade or Spyderco. I used to kind of chuckle at a grown man that would pull a Swiss Army knife out of his pocket. I mean seriously are we trying to earn some kind of badge here? My how my tune has changed. I use the hell out of the tools on that thing. In fact I am not sure if I will go back to the other folders I have even though I love about anything with an Axis Lock on it and the PM2 is one of my favorite knives.
I do at times miss the one hand opening and a lock. Wish they could work that in to the 91mm knives. I have a few 111's but like the 91mm and love the plus scale that lets me carry a pen.
