Is anyone else starting to hate flippers?

I don't think I have one single flipper that I really like! I never see the need for the 'flipper' nub. Most of my many folders open easily with the thumb stud or spydie hole, etc. Most open far faster when I don't use the flipper. To me the flipper aspect just seems like poor engineering - something to get hung up on your pocket at worst or unnecessary at best. Also, I think it looks silly. I hope this is just a fad.

Meh. Never got into them. But people like them. So good for them! Why is what other people like bothering you so? Nobody says you have to buy one.

I like them fine. I don't think they look silly. I doubt it's a fad. Pistols at dawn? :D

If I was doing stuff with a folder that would potentially make it close on me, or if I was worried about slipping onto the blade, then I would buy a knife with a flipper. But then again I see a flipper and I think "guard."

I am not sick of them at all.

In fact, during winter when heavy thick gloves are worn I prefer a flipper as it is the fastest, most reliable, and easiest means of opening the blade one handed.

Good thing is, there are a huge amount of options out there for knife nuts. No need to worry or hope the flipper is a "fad". Sort of sad really that you wouldn't want other knife nuts to enjoy what they like by hoping flippers either go away or reduce in number....

Assisted openers and flippers have been popular for over 15 years. Not really a fad.

'Nuff said.

Flippers are for fun.
Thumb Studs/Holes/Discs are for practicality.

It's not a fad, some of us just enjoy using a knife rather than showing off how pretty it is.

That being said, I like flippers and non-flippers. They each have a purpose.

Nope. The flipper is my favorite opening method. I find it far more natural than using thumbstuds. As far as I'm concerned, using a flipper isn't really that different than using the button on an auto. And I think we're way past the point of thinking it's just a fad.

Really? there is no way a flipper can be practical or useful? Strictly for showing off...

I personally enjoy assisted opening and flippers. I don't NEED either to open a knife quickly or comfortably, but I enjoy it.

How is a flipper practical? Thumb Studs/Holes/Discs were added for easy one handed opening. What purpose does a flipper have, other than for fun? Why do knifemakers add bearings to a knife? To make it smooth? Whether the knife has flipper or thumb studs/holes/discs doesn't matter when I'm opening the mail.

If flippers were practical, Chris Reeve would have made one a long time ago.

It's there so we can open our knives quick as possible, in the case of attack by man or beast! Then we have the flipper doing double duty, so we can stab with our steely knives, without fear of having our hands slide up onto the sharp edge! At least that's how I look at it.

I love my flippers when my thumbs get all sore and cracked in the winter and it's painful to use thumbs

I love flippers. Carrying one right now. Damn things fly open every time. No complaints here.

Not digging them so much these days, but KAI (among others but really put the flipper on the map with Speedsafe) has been producing flippers for what, 15 years or more now? Hard to call that a fad.
