Is anyone else starting to hate flippers?

The idea that flippers work with gloved hands sounds very practical and if it was more ambidexterious I'd probably own an Urban Trapper right now. My question is about Case's russlock. Now there's a flipper that would work really well with heavy gloves, but is it possible that it could flip open in the pocket with that big hunk of metal sticking out. I'm honestly curious, as one could be with me this winter.

I don't feel bad. I think you should feel bad for telling me to feel bad, if that's all you had to contribute to this discussion.

Well, I don't. Frankly, that was the politest response I had to someone who was using such poor reasoning for why flippers exist, along with an appeal to authority that left me amused if nothing else.

Kinda makes me wonder what other design elements we should bag on because Chris Reeve doesn't put them on his knives? LOL

Does that pocket clip have two screws? WEAK, must be just for fun!

Real answer? Flippers are 100% practical, regardless of whether you agree or not.

So why wish its a fad that will go away? Odd.

I hate mint chocolate chip ice cream. I hope it goes away forever.

What's odd is that you keep posting the same annoying comments. Did I say that I wish they'd go away forever? No, I didn't. I don't like the trend of making knives I would otherwise like into flippers. I'd much prefer it if they had a thumb stud too (along with the flipper). This is a respected knife forum so I wanted to gauge others reactions and was wondering if I was missing something when it came to the flipper.

I see no real advantage to flippers and I think people get waaaaaay too obsessed over the action a knife has because of the whole flipper thing, but neither hurts my feelings so I don't let it bother me.

So, yeah, I find them superfluous, but if I like a knife with a flipper I'll still happily buy it. Also, they're loads of fun for a lot of people and that's a big positive for them. Why have a hobby if you're not having fun?

I like flipper. It's my preferred method of opening knives(w the exception of knives who's locks allow blade to swing).

Never had an issue with them hanging up with in my pocket, I only carry tip up.

I also just left me the feeling of flipping open a well designed flipper. On the other hand, flippers that don't function well infuriate me! Should've just used a thumbstud!

I agree.

There are some people, in this thread, getting butt hurt, because I don't think flippers are practical. I never said I don't own them.

The only thing I don't like about flippers is that the flipper can get in the way if you're trying to cut something on a flat surface. Otherwise they're GTG.

It's your assertion that they aren't practical that we take issue with. After all, that's an incorrect assessment. No one's butthurt, frankly, poor logic is amusing if nothing else.

You are taking issue with my opinion that they aren't practical. It's my opinion. Whether you agree with my opinion, or not, doesn't mean jack to me.

What's amusing is that you haven't even tried to consider why I would think they are not practical. You are hell bent on your own opinion, that you dismiss anything that opposes it.

Actually, I am not concerned about your opinion (or whether you're concerned with my opinion of your opinion). I wouldn't have even responded if you'd said it was your opinion. Instead, you tried to make it sound like your opinion was a factual assessment:

How is a flipper practical? Thumb Studs/Holes/Discs were added for easy one handed opening. What purpose does a flipper have, other than for fun? Why do knifemakers add bearings to a knife? To make it smooth? Whether the knife has flipper or thumb studs/holes/discs doesn't matter when I'm opening the mail.

If flippers were practical, Chris Reeve would have made one a long time ago.

So, I'm curious. Help me out here. What do you believe is impractical about a quick, reliable deployment method that doesn't require some sort of Speedsafe type spring, but instead relies on a quality set of washers or bearings? What about that design means it's for "showing off" or "for fun"? I mean, showing off? "For fun"? In MY opinion, that describes balisongs to a tee. But flippers? What? Can't see it, sorry.

It's more about the tone, probably. I don't care which method a person prefers. But just because you don't find flippers practical -- you and Chris Reeve, sorry -- doesn't mean they aren't. I find flippers more reliable, faster, and have experienced none of the supposed negatives when using a well-designed model.

Not all flippers suffer from this.

Flippers are for fun.
Thumb Studs/Holes/Discs are for practicality.

It's not a fad, some of us just enjoy using a knife rather than showing off how pretty it is.

That being said, I like flippers and non-flippers. They each have a purpose.
So if Chris Reeve comes out with a flipper in the future, do flippers become practical?

My favorite flipping knife is a flipper! And anyone who doesn't like that can flip off.

What?

"You said hot dogs are nasty."
"Yes, I think hot dogs are nasty."
"BUT YOU SAID IT LIKE IT WAS A FACT!"

I'm done here. You're a special one, Quiet.
